We are so excited to announce YEAR 5 for the KARES Foundation’s virtual 5K and fundraiser, and our first year of The Ethan Effect!
Our son Ethan, who is almost 8. He has a similar story to some of the other affected kids: He achieved many milestones late, had delayed speech and motor development, and saw doctors in an array of disciplines until he received the genetic diagnosis of a KDM5C variant at the age of 4, which is early for many affected individuals. For Ethan, this ultra rare disorder is the cause of his non speaking, fine and gross motor delays, intellectual disability, vitiligo, short stature and altered muscle tone. Despite these challenges Ethan is one of the happiest kids you've ever met with the best personality and a great sense of humor!
KDM5C is a master regulator gene that controls how other genes are turned on and off in our bodies, causing dysregulation in all parts of the body for a lifetime. These can be seen on a very wide spectrum, so everyone’s symptoms and personal challenges can be different from one another’s. KDM5C is known to cause ADHD, autism, speech impairment, developmental and motor delays, anxiety, epilepsy, gastrointestinal issues and other characteristics.
