The Susquehanna Appalachian Trail club got its start from a need to create a local club (Harrisburg area) that could help in a major relocation of the Appalachian Trail. Two men, Earl Shaffer and Ralph Kinter had both expressed an interest in starting this new club and first met on a hike to Hawk Rock, high above Duncannon, on April 4, 1954. It was here overlooking the Susquehanna River, that our club was formed and got its name! You can read a thorough history of the club by going to this page on our web site. Although a lot has changed in 70 years, much has stayed the same.

SATC is one of 30 volunteer groups that maintain the 2,197.4 miles of the Appalachian Trail (A.T.). We offer more than 100 group hikes for people of all skill levels. We also host several fun social activities, including the December Holiday Party, a March Banquet, a Summer Picnic, and a Trail Maintainer picnic. We have a general membership meeting in the fall that provides a guest speaker on topics relevant to club members and our mission.
