Our Champ, Ethan at last year's run!

Ethan Schwartz is an amazing 7-year-old boy born with the same heart defect as Jimmy Kimmel’s son Billy.  Despite four separate heart surgeries, ranging from 8 days old to just over 2 years old,  doctors were unable to repair Ethan’s heart.  Weeks after his 2nd Birthday Ethan suffered a cardiac arrest which led to a severe anoxic brain injury. Ethan is wheelchair bound with Spastic Quadriplegia Cerebral Palsy. Despite the incredible odds stacked against him, he has continued to surprise everyone with his strength and determination to live.  Ethan brings so much joy to those he meets.

Everyone wants their child to have the opportunity to flourish and engage with their world. When your child is extremely medically fragile, and completely dependent on others for every task of daily life, the term “it takes a village” gains a whole new meaning. As Ethan grows, he requires new equipment to accommodate his needs and allow him to engage in the outside world. This year, Ethan requires an electric wheelchair, as his current chair is not able to handle his muscle tone or the life sustaining medical equipment that must accompany him. It has become increasingly difficult for caretakers to push Ethan’s chair on anything but a flat surface. Ethan is unable to take a stroll in his own neighborhood as there are far too many hills. Insurance will not approve all--or potentially not any--of this new chair. There are also many more costs for Ethan’s care not covered by medical insurance as Ethan requires vigilant care 24/7, therapies to maximize his cognitive and physical abilities, frequent hospital and doctor visits, and significant travel expenses.

Ethan is with his wonderful Aid Lorraine at CADES.

Ethan loves attending the CADES George Crothers Memorial School with his friends.  It is worth the very long trip every day from Gilbertsville, as there are no other even remotely adequate programs available closer to home.  The staff members are simply amazing. They believe in Ethan and his friends so much. It shows in everything that they do. It is easy to see Ethan’s happiness as he is pictured with his aid, Lorraine. Everyone is so accommodating to the families and bring such joy to their students.

This year the proceeds will not only help ease the financial burden for Ethan’s extensive care, but also fund adaptive technology, providing mobility to the wonderful children and adults that attend CADES in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania.
