St. Theresa Catholic School's 1st Walk for Water
Get ready to have fun as you walk, run, and jump in an obstacle course like no other! St. Theresa Catholic School is proud to sponsor "Walk for Water," a unique fund-raising event to benefit the community of Kasai.
Kasai is located in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in Africa. The people of Kasai don't just lack running water; they lack water, period. In order to obtain water, women and children walk 5 miles (approximately 4 hours) under the hot sun to a place where rain water has collected in water holes. This water is not clean; it is dark, dirty and murky. It is full of parasites and insects, and spreads deadly diseases among the community. Nevertheless, they have no choice but to drink it, and use it to cook, bathe, and wash their clothes. In order to carry the water back home, the children fill up large, plastic containers with a 25 liter capacity. Each full container weighs a whopping 55 pounds- as much as most of the children. To put things into perspective, that’s like walking under the scorching sun while carrying 6.5 gallons of milk.
A spring with clean, pure water was discovered 8 miles away from Kasai. Our dream is to provide the people of Kasai with fresh water by channeling the water from the spring to the village.
Our goal is to raise $50,000 to get the process started.
