What is SUDC? Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) occurs in children beyond the age of twelve months, (Joshua was more than 20 months old when he died). The cause of death remains unexplained after thorough case investigation including: examination of the death scene, performance of a complete autopsy, and a review of the child’s and family’s medical history. SUDC is a diagnosis of exclusion, in other words, a diagnosis of SUDC is made when other causes of death are not identified after a thorough investigation. We have never heard of SUDC. Is this something new? SUDC is not new, but it is very rare. Approximately 1.4 out of every 100,000 toddlers born this year will die without warning and without a known cause. In comparison, the incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is 45 times more common. Your generous contribution enables us to continue funding research, advocate for SUDC and brings support to families worldwide. The SUDC Foundation is the only program in the world that is solely devoted to uncovering the mystery of SUDC. For more information about Joshua’s story, visit www.sudc.org/joshuaburda.
