Description

The Greenways 5K race is unique in that most of its route is on the most scenic portion of the Third Creek Greenway, but it also features live music, plenty of food, and living plant awards to overall and age group winners.

The course is outstanding, and is on the first greenway built in Knoxville back in the early 1970's (starting from the original 1½ miles the City began an extensive greenways development in the 1990's and we now have almost 30 miles of greenways in Knoxville and more in Knox County).

The race starts at West High School, which provides a comfortable enclosed staging area if there's rain or cold, but usually we're outside in the sunshine for registration and post-race activities. After about 50 yards on Tobler Lane in front of the school, the course turns left onto the Greenway. The Greenway then leads the runners for 1½ miles to Concord Ave., generally through an urban forest and not too far from Third Creek, which it crosses twice. One of the creek crossings is followed by a railroad underpass that is especially scenic. At Concord Avenue the course turns right for about 100 yards, then right on Painter Ave. for 150 yards, then back on the Greenway. The route is then repeated back to a finish line near Tobler Lane. The course is essentially flat with two very short hills going out andback.

The post-race activities include music, food, and awards. Proceeds of the race benefit the Knox Greenways Coalition, the citizen group promoting greenways in Knoxville and Knox County.

The male course record is 15:41 and the female record is 16:34. Participation is usually in the 150 to 200 range.

Weather

Averages: High 64 Low 39.
Most of the course is protected from the wind, and a warm day could be exacerbated by the closeness of the trees, so be sure not to overdress.
