Description

The 2nd Annual Burke Hospice Metric Century Charity Bike Race offers a challenging metric and half-metric century bike ride and post-race lunch. All profits will benefit Burke Hospice and Palliative Care. The courses tour the western part of Burke County along the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The event starts on the banks of the Catawba River and winds through the rural roads and rolling hills of Burke County. The metric and half-metric routes merge as the event passes scenic Lake James with panoramic views of the nearby mountains including Table Rock and Shortoff in Pisgah National Forest. At this point, riders begin the challenging second half of the course which features several moderate climbs and a ride along the Johns River before finishing with a series of rolling hills.

The ride is fully supported by SAG wagons, rest stops, fire and rescue and police support. A post-ride lunch, technical t-shirt and chip timing are included.

All proceeds from the event benefit Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, whose mission is to provide care for someone who is at the end of their life so they may live as fully and as comfortably as possible. Burke Hospice cares for over 100 patients per day who suffer from serious illnesses like cancer, heart failure, and Alzheimer's.

No one is ever turned away for an inability to pay. Burke Hospice also provides continuing support to those left behind. Fundraisers like the Metric Century are vital to Burke Hospice's patients; since 2008, the organization has provided over $2 million in care without any type of reimbursement.

Burke Hospice and Palliative Care serves Burke, Catawba, Caldwell, Avery, McDowell, Rutherford, Cleveland and Lincoln counties of western North Carolina.

Want to help but can't come out for the ride? The Burke Hospice Zero Century option is intended for those who would love to come out for the ride but, for whatever the reason, cannot come. Your entry into the Zero Century entitles you to all of the swag the actual riders receive, including technical tee-shirt, lunch, and other benefits.
