On June 6, 1944, in the largest amphibious invasion in history, 150,000 troops landed across five beaches and two drop zones. In the early morning hours, paratroopers landed on the flanks of the invasion zone to secure bridges and crossroads. The invasion waves came ashore as dawn broke. On Omaha Beach, Americans from the 1st and 29th struggled against well-entrenched German positions along the bluffs.
