Summer Training Teams for 2022- Choose one of our following teams:

  • ROAD: Half or Full Marathon Road Running Teams (from West End or Southside)
  • TRAIL: Half or Full Marathon Trail Running Team (in and around the Richmond area) 
  • Any program: Run with us for Fun 
  • All programs include optional Sunday Runs from the Lucky Road Running Store @ Willow Lawn 

Please note: Registration for Race Team RVA training does not include race entry. You must register separately for your desired race.  Those training with the Trail team will receive a CLUB Discount to participate in the Gritty Leakes Trail Half/Full Marathon on Nov 5, 2022 (Goochland, Virginia)

ROAD Running Teams - 2 Teams: Half or Full Marathon

Saturday ROAD teams will be training for a half or full marathon, or join this team to just run with the group at any of the following 2 locations:

  • West End:  Short Pump (3329 Pump Rd, Henrico, VA 23233) (June - August) then shifts to Willow Lawn @ Lucky Road Running Store from September through November
  • Southside: Woodlake Aquatic & Fitness Center (AFC) (14710 Village Square Pkwy, Midlothian, VA 23112). 

Teams formally meet each Saturday, starting June 4 through November 6, for organized group runs starting at 7am.   Beginning July 2, we move to 6:30am starts through Labor day.  After Labor Day, we switch back to a 7:00am start.  Team members may switch between locations during the season. Program includes optional group recovery runs from Lucky Road Running Store at Willow Lawn on Sundays, plus mid-week group track and hill workouts at 3 locations (west end, southside & downtown areas).   Other informal group runs may be organized by the team but these are dependent upon registration each year.  If you would like to organize a group run in your area during training, please do so.  There may be others looking for the same!

TRAIL Running Teams - 2 Teams: Half or Full Marathon

Saturday Trail teams will be training for a half or full marathon, or join this team to just run with the group at any location that week:

The Trail Team will run from various locations throughout the Richmond area including, but not limited to, Pocahantas State park, Capital Trail, Buttermilk, North Bank, Pony Pasture, etc.

Teams formally meet each Saturday, starting June 4 through November 6, for organized group runs starting at 7am.   Beginning July 2, we move to 6:30am starts through Labor day.  After Labor Day, we switch back to a 7:00am start.  Team members may switch between locations during the season.  Program includes optional group runs from Lucky Road Running Store at Willow Lawn.   Other informal group runs may be organized by the team on Sundays - Friday but those depend on the team each year and the willingness of someone on the team to lead / organize these runs.

Program Costs**

ROAD - Full Marathon Training Cost: $70  - includes Training Plan for 6 months, runs lead by Coaches, Routes and Water SAGs provided, & Team Swag 

ROAD - Half Marathon Cost: $50 - includes Training Plans for: SUMMER: June - August (13 weeks), and FALL: Sept - Nov (11 weeks), runs lead by Coaches, Routes and Water SAGs provided, & Team Swag.  If you start in June (Summer program), you can continue on and train for FALL half session at no additional cost. Those that start in September with the FALL team, will train for 11 weeks for the Richmond Half marathon on 11/12/2022.  The costs for this program is $50, regardless of whether you are training for both the Summer & Fall sessions or for only one of these sessions.

Just Run Program Cost (ROAD or TRAIL): $40 - group runs lead by Coaches, Routes and Water SAGs provided, & Team Swag).  Using this program allows you to run with the team as much as possible without having a race goal or objective in mind.  Routes will be provided for the half and full teams and you are welcome to run as much or as little so you maintain your fitness level.  This program is for those that want to run with a group as a way to stay in shape over the summer and fall.

TRAIL - Full Marathon Training Cost: $75  - includes Training Plan for 6 months, runs lead by Coaches, Routes and Water SAGs provided, & Team Swag.  This program aligns to our signature trail race, Gritty Leakes Full Marathon race in Goochland on 11/5/2022.

TRAIL - Half Marathon Cost: $55 - includes training for: SUMMER: June - August (13 weeks), and FALL: Sept - Nov (10 weeks), runs lead by Coaches, Routes and Water SAGs provided, & Team Swag.  If you start in June (Summer program), you can continue on and train for FALL half session at no additional cost. Those that start in September with the FALL team, will train for 10 weeks for the Gritty Leakes Half marathon race in Goochland on 11/5/2022.  The costs for this program is $55, regardless of whether you are training for both the Summer & Fall sessions or for only one of these sessions.

Mid-Week Runs & Workouts:  FREE, open to anyone that wants to join.

All programs include optional Sunday recovery runs from Lucky Road Running Store at Willow Lawn.

Race Team RVA Running Club is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization run by volunteers.  None of our officers or volunteers are paid - we do this because we love our sport and giving back to the community.   The program fees help us maintain our club and allow us to offer various training and running programs throughout the year.  

Training Team Programs

Marathon Training Program - starts June 4, 2022 to train for the Richmond Marathon on November 12

This program will prepare you for any fall race you choose.  The training plans will align to the Richmond Marathon but can be modified to align to your race.

Requirements for the FULL marathon training program:  Must be able to run 3 miles by June 4.
Must be at least 18 years old to participate.

Half Marathon Program -Two Optional starts:  June 4 (for the Ashland Half in August 2022) or August 27/Labor Day (for the Richmond Half on 11/12/2022) 

If you want to commit to a full season (6 months) of half marathon training with the team, this is the program for you. Those who register for this program will begin in June or August and will train for the Ashland Half (formally Patrick Henry Half) scheduled sometime in August 2022 and the and Richmond Half (Sat, Nov 12).  This is a base-building program that will keep you fit to run any half marathon in late summer or early winter season.

Requirements for the half marathon training program:  Must be able to run 2-3 miles by June 4 (Summer session) or August 27 (Fall Session)
Must be at least 18 years old to participate, or 14 with a parent's approval.

Just Run Program (join at ANY time during the summer/fall program)

New to running or just want to stay in shape? This program will help keep you fit and prepare you for any 5k through marathon race, depending on your desire to run the distance.  For the athlete that wants to stay in shape and use running as a means to stay fit through the summer / fall.

TRAIL - Half or Full Trail Training Team (aligns to the Gritty Leakes Half & Full Marathons on Nov 5 2022)

This program will prepare you to run our signature trail event (Gritty Leakes Trail Marathons)  or any trail race you choose in the fall.  Training continues through November 5.  Those running with the team will receive a 30% discount off the registration price for Gritty Leakes Half or Full marathon.  This program is for beginner through experienced trail running.  All trail runs will be in and around the Richmond area and will vary weekly depending on weather and trail conditions.  The team will run trails that are within a 30 minute drive of Richmond and typically include trails like Pocahontas State park, North Bank, Buttermilk, Virginia Capital Trail, Pony Pasture.  Program includes Sunday Group road runs from Lucky Road Running Store located in the Willow Lawn shopping center.

Requirements for the trail full or half marathon training program:  Must be able to run 5 miles by June 4 (first run will be an easy 5 mile trail run).
Must be at least 18 years old to participate in the Full or 16 to participate in the half (with Parent/Guardian's permission)

Refund Policy – If you change your mind about participating in our programs, we are happy to honor your decision as long as the refund request is made before July 2, 2022 (for June 5 or early starts) and September 9 (for August 27 starts).  To request a refund, please submit your request in writing to Dan Blankenship, raceteamrva@gmail.com. A check will be processed once the refund has been accepted and approved.

2022 Summer Training Program Saturday Group Runs

Train with the team that runs road or trails in and around Richmond!   Whether your first or 20th half or full marathon, or you just want to run to stay in shape through the Summer/Fall of 2022.  Come join us for the fun that kicks off the weekend of June 4.
