One of my earliest childhood memories is of visiting my friend, Katie, in the hospital. My mom and I drove about an hour away from our small town to get to the hospital. She and her family were staying at the Ronald McDonald House (I remember being jealous about that), so she could be closer to her doctors. My mom tried to prepare me by saying that Katie was very sick and that she probably would be missing some hair. I remember walking in her hospital room -- that image of Katie with her patchwork hair and her radiant smile is forever etched into my mind. I now understand Katie was undergoing treatment for leukemia. She fought a good fight for several years, but I lost my good friend before she completed second grade.
I am riding LOWVELO for Katie Ryan, with the hope that more kids like Katie will make it through second grade.
