We’re excited to celebrate 15 years of getting kids moving, challenging themselves, and having fun!
The Sportsplex Tri for Kids is a USAT-sanctioned triathlon for ages 5–15, featuring age-appropriate swim, bike, and run distances. Athletes compete in the age group they are in as of December 31, 2027. A USAT membership is required, and a one-day membership can be purchased during registration.
The Small Fry Tri: A fun, non-competitive event for our littlest athletes, ages 2–5. They’ll slide down the splash park water slide, ride whatever they choose, and finish with a run through the big finish line!
Race Day: Saturday, July 31, 2027
Whether it’s their first race or they’re returning for another year, we can’t wait to welcome your young athlete to the Sportsplex Tri for Kids!

About US
The Sportsplex Tri for Kids began as a dream of Nicole Carter, Sarah Herren, and Kimberly Myers.
In 2013, they launched the first Sportsplex Kids Triathlon for ages 5–15, alongside the Small Fry Tri for ages 2–5. The event quickly earned recognition, receiving the 2013 Innovative Program and Special Event of the Year Award from the Alabama Recreation and Parks Association.
The Triathlon flourished under Nicole Carter’s leadership until 2024, when she passed the torch to a new team of women inspired by the event’s impact on the community. With Nicole’s support, Laurie Clark, Meghan Deagan, Caitlin Fitzsimons, Molli Newman, Whitney Shelton, and Olivia Holden carried the tradition forward in 2025. Laurie Clark, Meghan Deagan, Caitlin Fitzsimons, Molli Newman, and Olivia Holden are excited to carry that legacy forward in 2026 and beyond.
Under their leadership, the Triathlon became part of the USAT Youth Series in the Alabama/North Florida region, further expanding its visibility and prestige. The 2025 event welcomed 210 registrants, including 50 in the Small Fry Tri—an impressive turnout that surpassed last year’s numbers and reflects the race’s growing momentum. Athletes traveled not only from across Alabama but also from Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, and North Carolina, demonstrating the event’s broad appeal across the Southeast.
The organizers are excited to see the Sportsplex Tri for Kids continue to thrive and look forward to many more years of racing fun! If you would like to share comments or suggestions, please email sportsplextriforkids@gmail.com.
