Randy Wilson Memorial 4 on the 4th Virtual Run

Wed July 1 - Sat July 4 Flagstaff, AZ 86001 US RaceJoy Ready

This is the traditional FREE Randy Wilson Memorial 4 on the 4th iconic Flagstaff holiday run.  For the first time, the 2020 edition will be held virtually.
Inspired by the Dipsea Race in California, Race Co-Director Caroline Herrington's father, Randy Wilson, established the Flagstaff FREE 4 on the 4th as a local tradition in 2009.  Eleven years ago, Randy started this homemade race with the help of Neil Weintraub, Jack Welch, Mike Elder, the card stock aisle at Michael's, and Caroline's crafting skills.  News of the race was spread through word-of-mouth and has been a local's favorite ever since.

The unique aspect of this race is the Head Start  timing and scoring system based on age and gender.  Randy's vision was for all runners to arrive at the finish line at the same time and celebrate together.  Randy passed away in July 2018, missing the event in 2019.  And now we all face the constrictions of a pandemic.  We move forward and continue the 4 on the 4th race tradition - Virtually running in 2020 to honor our national holiday and especially Randy's memory and his many contributions to our community. Learn about how head starts for runners will be calculated (walkers will just see their walking times). View the course map on MapMyRun or download the GPX File.

IMPORTANT UPDATE!!!! Beginning Saturday evening 6/20/2020, per Flagstaff City Order, masks must be worn with city limits, including outdoor spaces when social distancing cannot be maintained. READ the Order!

So while we are sad that we cannot meet together in person for the race this year, our hope is that you will join us and run safely on your own -- enjoy the views and tranquility of the suggested stretch of the FUTS this 4th of July weekend or if can't make it up to Flagstaff, pick your favorite 4 mile flat course and join the fun.   If it works for you, we continue to offer support for the Flagstaff Family Food Bank through this great run as well.

Please spread the word, we'd love this race to be a part of everyone's 4th of July celebrations.  Happy running and we hope you enjoy this opportunity to get out and race the 4 on the 4th with a great view of the Peaks!

Register any time up until our traditional July 4th cut off at 6:45 AM. You will have until July 4th, 5 PM to submit your run finish time to the virtual results roster.

Through your RunSignUp profile, download and print your race Bib with your assigned number.  You have options for the locating the details on the course (if you are a first-timer!!).

For running the actual FUTS course, as usual, the race will begin on the FUTS at the West Flagstaff Little League baseball fields just across the historic Flagstaff flagpole on Thorpe road. From there, the route follows the FUTS 2 miles up and 2 miles back - please be careful and aware that the trail does cross residential streets and there are poles in the middle of the trail at each intersection.

For Virtual Anywhere - Your Own Course - find your favorite 4 mile route.

For BOTH - the FUTS trail and Your Own - use RaceJoy to make the most of your event!!  Details are below - you get ready in advance, and then just hit Start and run with your phone.  You can then directly upload your finish time to the results from the RaceJoy app!!   (And don't worry, you can also pass on Race Joy, run your 4 miles, and manually load up your time to the results too.)

Traditionally, Jack Welch has been at the turnaround point to greet runners with encouragement and great music - this year, use your imagination :) and RaceJoy will give you some fun surprise authenticity!

Download the GPX file here for the exact FUTS course. and also view the course on Map My Run and thru RaceJoy.   Details here!

For this free run,  Randy's daughter Caroline Herrington and I ask that you please donate cans of food to the Flagstaff Family Food Bank!
If the process of food cans isn't convenient for you, we can accept credit card donations through registration here which will be 100% passed through to the Food Bank (receipts for tax purposes will be auto-generated to the email address you provide in registration).   While we can't be together, at least we can keep this great tradition alive!

Flagstaff, AZ US 86001

Run the designated FUTS course or your Own Course - 4 miles - anytime between July 1st 6 AM and July 4th 5 PM.  Then upload your run finish time before 5:01 PM July 4th -- on the honor system!!!
For Scoring ... based on your age, we will calculate your head start, and you will receive a finisher's certificate. Top ten will have their winner's certificate emailed.
