Race History

Adam’s Heart Runs began about 1977 as a result of the efforts of Dr. Adam Robertson. Dr. Robertson was an emergency room physician at the old Cooper Green hospital on 8th Avenue South for many years. He was also one of the original members of the Birmingham Track Club after it was organized by Dr. Arthur Black. An avid runner, he completed many races from distances of 5k all the way through ultra-marathons. Keeping things in the family, his wife Ginni served as race director.

The Adam’s Heart Runs were originally held to benefit the American Heart Association, hence the name. In keeping with the heart theme, the runs were held around Valentine’s Day. To cater to a variety of runners, multiple distances of 5k, 10k and 10-miles were offered.
