Frequently Asked Questions
Some commonly asked questions:
Do we need to know which legs we are doing before we sign up?
Answer: NOPE! Just sign up and sort that out later, then bring a completed TEAM ROSTER showing who is completing which legs to check in on Friday night.
Do we have to divide the legs evenly, or can one person run more legs and someone else fewer?
Answer: Each person on the team must complete at least one leg, but other than that it can be divided however you like.
Is there a cutoff?
Answer: YES.
-
Racers must start the kayak leg by 11:45 a.m.
-

-
Race cutoff is 4:00 p.m.
I am an Iron Division competitor and I do not have a way to get to the start line - can I get a ride?
Answer: YES. If you are an Iron Division competitor and are coming to the race solo, please email us at contact@peninsulaadventuresports.com and we will pair you up with another Iron competitor or team to give you a ride.
Can I bring my dog?
Answer: Sorry, no dogs allowed on the course or at any of the exchanges.
Can I Wear Headphones?
We’d rather you didn’t. If you insist, keep the volume low so you can hear course marshals, passing runners and bicycles, traffic, and cougars. If you can’t hear your own footsteps, the volume is too high.
Do We Drive Ourselves?
Yes! As with most relay events, teams provide their own in-race vehicle. If you have the space, we suggest enlisting a nonrunner friend to drive. Be prepared for a couple narrow forest roads.
Is the Course Open to Traffic?
Yes! The mountain bike leg is on the Foothills Trials System, which is a multi-use trail open to the public, including on race day. All road riding - on both the mountain bike and road bike legs - is on public roads that are open to traffic, with the exception of the final block into the race hub at Pebble Beach Park, which has a traffic closure (follow the directions of the police on duty). The kayak leg is open to boat traffic, inluding an incoming ferry boat at noon (hence the time cutoff previously listed). The run is on sidewalks and the paved Olympic Discovery Trail, but there are a couple driveways that you must cross which could have car traffic. You are participating in Big Hurt at your own risk - stay aware and make good decisions!
Can I pick up my kayak earlier than 3:00 p.m.?
Answer: NO. You cannot. Do not even ask. As someone who has read the race website prior to registration, you saw and agreed to a 3pm kayak pick up time when you signed up. If the race schedule provided does not work for your personal schedule or travel plans, maybe this is not the race for you. Please know that asking for exceptions for yourself is not appropriate and that verbal abuse of volunteers for enforcing the rule will not be tolerated. This includes parking in the lane closure on front street prior to the road opening - do not do this! You are jeopardizing our city race permit by entering a road closure.
We hope that next year you will all plan to RELAX and enjoy the race until the kayak pick up time. You are in a beautiful scenic location at the park, and have the opportunity to support the slower racers by cheering them on (just like you faster racers had people cheering for you! That was fun, right?!). Or if you want to wander out and support our downtown businesses and come back at 3pm, that is great too. But we ask that you abide by the race rules, show respect for our staff and volunteers, and enjoy the event that we have worked so hard to build for you.
