The Bakersfield Sikh Women’s Association (BSWA) is excited to announce our sixth annual 5K Walk on April 29th, 2023, at Riverwalk Park. This year’s theme is a “Walk for Seva (Selfless Service)”. Guru Nanak Dev Ji is the founder of the Sikh religion. The foundational beliefs of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Sikhism include unity of all humankind, engaging in selfless service and striving for social justice for the benefit and prosperity of all. One of the main pillars of Guru Nanak Devi Ji’s teachings is “Vand Chakko”, which means to share what you have and consume it together as a community. At the heart of these actions is the idea of Seva, meaning selfless service work performed for others without expecting anything in return. We believe Seva weaves the thread of trust and respect to bind and strengthen our communities. It is these principles that inspired us to start BSWA. Since 2016, we’ve experienced first-hand the power of Seva, with more and more people, businesses, and organizations coming together providing help in giving underrepresented students the chance to lessen the financial stress of attending college.
In line with our mission to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of our community’s youth - regardless of gender, race, religion, sexual orientation or disability –the Sikh Women’s Association of Bakersfield seeks to provide annual scholarship opportunities to high school students with help from community leaders and organizations like yourself. Over the years, the Sikh Women’s Association has raised over $150,000 towards youth programs and scholarships as well as helped to support initiatives at the Bakersfield Homeless Shelter.
Our non-profit is a registered 501(c)(3) and all donations are tax deductible. We truly appreciate your support in helping our Bakersfield youth succeed.
