FAQs
Q: What is the Weight Watchers® Walk-It Challenge and the Weight Watchers Walk-It Day 5K?
A: The Weight Watchers® Walk-It Challenge, held between April 3 and May 21, 2011, encourages Weight Watchers® members, family and friends to walk on a regular basis and ultimately walk 5K on Weight Watchers® Walk-It Day, May 22, 2011 in either one of over 50 official Weight Watchers® 5K events hosted by the RRCA or one of their choosing.
Q: Why is there a fee to participate in an "official" Walk-It Day 5K event?
A: Fees for participating in a road race or walk cover the many costs of producing the event. Costs may include supplies, refreshments, insurance, police, barricades, signs, permits, bib numbers, finisher’s premium, etc. These fees and costs are customary for road races and walks. Weight Watchers® Walk-It Day 5K participants will receive a bib number to pin to their shirt as well as a specially designed t-shirt. Please Note: Entry for the Weight Watchers®Walk-It Day 5K in Lake Balboa Park will be by pre-registration only; there will be no event day registration.
Q: Why should I participate in an "official" Weight Watchers®Walk-It Day 5K event?
A: Accomplishing a goal should be celebrated! By participating in an official Weight Watchers® Walk-It Day 5K event you will have the opportunity to share the excitement of your accomplishment with other walkers. Along with the camaraderie of other participants you will experience a well-organized and safe walking event hosted by experienced Road Runners Club of America race organizers.
Q: Should I train for this event?
A: USA Marathon Training, a registered club of Road Runners Club of America, has scheduled a organized training walks and lectures to be held at the Zoo Magnet School in Griffith Park each Saturday from April 16 - May 14, 2011. All levels are encouraged to attend these free training sessions. We have an exciting and informative lecture series to follow your Saturday training workout. See 5K training program above or visit our website at www.usamarathontraining.com for more information.
Q: Can I run in the Weight Watchers® Walk-It Day 5K event?
A: Yes! But since these are non-competitive walking events you may not receive an official finishing time when you cross the finish line.
Q: Can my friends come to the Weight Watchers® Walk-It Day 5K to support me?
A: Yes! Friends and loved ones are welcome to cheer from the sidelines and watch you cross the finish line. Volunteers are welcome as well and are encouraged to contact USA Marathon Training at info@usamarathontrianing.com to inquire about volunteer opportunities. The Weight Watchers® Walk-It Day 5K is also open to the public so your friends and family may enter too!
Q: What should expect when I arrive at the Weight Watchers® Walk-It Day event?
A: Arrive to the walk early! You may feel a little nervous if this is the first time you are participating in an organized walking event so allow ample time to park and prepare for your walk. Upon arrival you will most likely report to the volunteer desk to receive your participant bib number along with safety pins to affix the bib to the front of your shirt. The walk organizers may have arranged for a group warm-up or you may conduct your own warm-up. Leave yourself time to visit the bathroom and meet up with your training buddies. Water hydration tables will be provided at along the route but please bring a plastic water bottle to carry during the walk.
Q:What is proper walking etiquette?
A: Approximately 15 minutes before the walk is about to begin you will be asked to line up at the starting line. If you plan to run the 5K, line up closer to the starting line and slower walkers should line up toward the back of the crowd. If you are walking on a trail do not walk more than two abreast and always give way to a faster walker approaching from behind. If you are approaching a group of slower walkers announce loudly "passing on your left!" then overtake the slower walkers. If a water station is offered during the event, pick up one cup of water and continue walking. Always follow the instructions of volunteers especially when crossing an intersection, and thank them for volunteering their time. They are there for your safety and enjoyment of the course.
Q: Are dogs allowed?
A: Dogs are allowed as long as they are on leash at all times during the walk and the picnic. Participants with dogs are asked to walk at the back of the group so as not to trip other participants. Each participant must carry a doggie bag and clean up after their own pet.
Q: Can I push my kid in a baby jogger?
A: Baby joggers are NOT allowed as a portion of our route will be on trails.
Q: Now that I’ve successfully completed the Weight Watchers® Walk-It Challenge and the Walk-It Day 5K, what’s next?
A: Good question! Now that you’ve begun walking for fitness, you can maintain your walking regime or advance to a run/walk or run group via the USA Marathon Training Program. We train in Griffith Park throughout the year. Visit our website at www.usamarathontraining.com
