Why a Benefit Run/Walk?

Leave Your Footprint across the globe!!!

In Uganda, 65% of students dropout of primary school, in large part because school fees are costly and meals are not provided. 30% of girls dropout due to a lack of hygiene pads. These children often turn to child labor, crime, begging, trafficking, or early pregnancy. Join us for a 5K run/walk to support SOVCA, an organization that provides education to girls, orphans, and vulnerable children and provides jobs for villagers in rural Uganda.

The Deets

Check-in begins at 8:15am and the run begins at 9:00am. Sign up by 8/31/19 to be guaranteed a T-Shirt and refreshments, included in your registration! Families with kids and strollers are welcome, and will start just after the runners. Scroll down to view route details and maps.

ABOUT SOVCA

Sacred Orphan Vulnerable Child Association (SOVCA) is a registered community based organization (CBO) located in the rural village of Kabale district in Southwest Uganda. The organization supports the Sacred Nursery and Primary School, a 300-student school founded in 2015 to meet the growing need for quality education for orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC), especially girls and those with HIV or whose parents have HIV/AIDS. 55% of the students are girls, and 40% are OVCs.

SOVCA is currently the only organization in the area that provides every student with breakfast and lunch, every day, and gives the most vulnerable children (~30%) free education. In addition, they are educating and protecting girls and OVCs against sex trafficking and child labor. The school charges low school fees, so it relies solely on community-based donations and supplemental income through renting gardening space for vegetable farming. It is embedded in the community and has passionate volunteers.

However, the school currently rents small classrooms and has built temporary structures, with no more room to accommodate growing demand. Donations will be used to support capital projects, such as purchasing land or a bus to provide students with transport. These assets can also be used for income generating projects, such as brick-making, gardening, and local transportation, which in turn will help fund future building projects! Our hope is to seed the school so they may grow sustainably.
