7th Annual Care to Carry on 5K Run / Walk

Sat April 9, 2022 Philadelphia, PA 19104 US Directions

About The Cause

A portion of the proceeds will continue to support children's bereavement organizations such as Camp Erin Philadelphia, but also provide funding to launch a new 501(c)3 whose mission will be to financially support several year-round children's bereavement organizations throughout the Greater Philadelphia Area.

Childhood grief is more common than most realize, and knowing how to talk to and guide a child who has experienced the death of someone close to them can be challenging. It is normal for adults to want to protect children from difficult experiences and information. Unaddressed grief, though, can cause youth to feel isolated and alone, both in their family and from other children. Children who are grieving are at greater risk than their peers for depression, suicide, poverty and substance abuse.

Grief is a natural and normal response to death and a lifelong process. It is made up of many different emotions, thoughts and behaviors. Through understanding, support, and opportunities to freely express thoughts and feelings, children and teens can develop healthy coping skills that enhance their lives. A child’s hope can be restored and they once again can imagine a life full of possibilities.

Camp Erin Philadelphia is a transformational weekend camp for children & teens ages 6-17, that combines traditional, fun camp activities with grief education and emotional support, free of charge for all families. Led by grief professionals and trained volunteers, camp provides a unique opportunity for youth to increase levels of hope, enhance self-esteem, and especially to learn that they are not alone.

Why We Care to Carry On:
The Care to Carry On 5k was founded through a collaboration with the Care for the Cure Foundation in 2014. Inspired by Caroline Gallagher Cranston who lost her fight to AML Leukemia after 21 months, the Care for the Cure Foundation was founded to raise awareness and funds for blood cancer treatment. The Foundation has since expanded to support like-minded organizations. We understand that life-taking diseases like Leukemia not only affects the person battling it, but every other person in their life that cares about them as well. Both Erin and Caroline's compassion and concern for others who they left behind are why we Care to Carry on.
