RELAY TEAM INFO

Relay Participant RACE INSTRUCTIONS!

RELAY TEAM BIB NUMBERS
Each relay team member will be dynamically assigned a unique individual bib number at packet pickup.  For team timing, the Team Name applied to each of the 2 or 3 team members is the team identifier.

RELAY TEAM RUNNER ORDER
Any team member can run a leg, with a transition between members occurring at the designated Exchange Zone. Team time will be calculated by combining the times of the members attached to the Team Name. See below for exchange logistics.

RACE DAY
Leg 1 runner reports to the start line on Ohio Drive SW.
Leg 2 & 3 runners report to the relay exchange zone located near mile 5 on Independence Avenue. Signage will be posted and volunteers will be available to assist at the exchange zone.  Leg 1 is approximately 5 miles long, leg 2 is approximately 6 miles, and leg 3 is approximately 2 miles.

EXCHANGE ZONE LOGISTICS
The first leg team runner will cross the START LINE timing mat and also will cross the 5 MILE timing mat prior to the Relay Exchange Zone --  and will hand off to the next runner in the Exchange Zone.
The second leg team runner exits the Exchange Zone and continues on the course and crosses the 11.3 MILE timing mat prior to the Exchange Zone – and will hand off to the next runner.
The third leg team member exits the Exchange Zone and continues to the FINISH LINE mat and crosses for the team.
** Two member teams follow the same steps depending on the order of legs each is to run, skipping the exchange to a third runner.

FINISHER MEDALS
After team members running Legs 1 & 2 finish their respective legs, they will collect their finisher medals, water, and refreshments in the team exchange zone. They can then head to the Finish Festival in West Potomac Park to meet their final runner. Please note that to insure accurate timing, ONLY the final runner will be allowed through the finish chute.
The final Leg runner will collect their medal, water, and refreshments after they run across the finish line.

TEAM IMPERATIVE RULES
Team members need to remember that the starting runner crosses the start mat.  After that, it is imperative that the only timing mat a relay runner crosses is when each is FINISHING a leg.
This also means that relay team members need to be particularly aware to NOT go anywhere near the timing split point at any time other than when running their leg (including not crossing the finish line with the last teammate.)

LAST RULE - HAVE A BLAST!!
