Description
If you run around here, you knew him. Maybe not "knew" him, but knew who he was. I talked with him dozens of times before and after events, but really I only knew him as John Schultz, the old guy that runs in just red shorts.
I ran in so many events with John that I came to rely on seeing him so much that if I didn't I'd feel a bit of a loss. I'd wonder, 'What race is John doing instead?' or 'I hope he's OK.' John was a great inspiration to me, and I'm sure to many other runners in this area and beyond. He represented freedom. He would run in just those red shorts and sneakers no matter the conditions. Hot sun, cold rain, snow, bitter cold; I can only remember one time ever seeing him with a light jacket on (no shirt), and that just said to me 'It's f-ing cold!'
I'm sure that there are hundreds, probably thousands (John ran like a hundred races a year!) of stories out there from each runner that he touched. He was a symbol for us all to persevere. That's why I'm putting this event together; so we can gather, run, and share what John meant to each of us by coming out and performing on a winters day.
Fusion Racing is clock timing the event. Timothy's of Newark is graciously providing their restaurant for bib pick-up and hosting us with a post event luncheon (free food, cash bar).
