May 11th, 2013 marked the FIRST Annual Vince Morris 5k Walk/Run, and Dr. Betts 5k combined, held at the dedicated Vince Morris Trail at Chapel Branch in memory of Athletic Director Vince Morris, a frequent caretaker of the cross country team's course. Lately the involvement of the Nanticoke River Watershed Conservancy (NRWC) has had a large influence in maintenance, care, and the attention this site needs thanks to tireless volunteers.
Normally, this event is held on Mother’s Day but in 2019 we are trying something different. On May 11th, we will have a courtesy, optional tour at Chapel Branch, 9:00 AM, to acquaint everyone with the trail and 5k that will be held on May 25th. In the event of foul weather, the informal walk tour will occur May 12th, 2019. Early registration is due May 17th, and packets can be picked up on the 11th as well as registration paid for the 25th. On-site registration is available for a higher price as well. Additionally, a benefit for NRWC is being held at Rehoboth DogFish Head, May 22nd. During this evening alone, registration at the preregistration price will be taken and numbers can be picked up for the walk/run on the 25th. As is the practice, custom-made trophies will be created honoring Dr. Betts and Vince’s dedication to events that tie the community together, all runners and walkers are welcome.
Registration forms are available at harrybrake.wordpress.com or by request by calling 302 222 3671 or email at harry.brake@gmail.com starting April 25th, 2019 and due for early registration by May 17, 2019 (with the exception of May 22nd at DogFish Head in Rehoboth)– and can be sent to the NRWC. Checks can be made out to Nanticoke River Watershed Conservancy, and a transparent report will be made to all registrants so you will see the proceeds earned, and that half of all proceeds will benefit the local Cancer Association, while half goes to maintaining aspects of Chapel Branch.
Again, preregistration will be due May 17, 2019 via mail as listed above. Any questions can be directed at harry.brake@gmail.com. Also, registration can be physically dropped off in a marked envelope at Lank, Johnson, and Tull up to May 17th, 2019 – Registration will be verified via email once received - (open weekdays only) for preregistration, located at 521 N Market St, Seaford, DE 19973.
All proceeds will be marked and tagged with the results of the 5k, so you will be informed of where your donations go, as well as this being tax deductible, so you can do this again each year for the great causes these 5k’s benefit in memory of these two invaluable heroes to Seaford. The walk/run will begin at 8:45 AM but a brief tour and walk showing key points you will need to look out for BEFORE the event will occur at 8:00 AM. As last year, a new part of the trail will be utilized as part of this walk/run to show you a new extension of Chapel Branch. May 11th will afford an opportunity, at 9:00 AM, a free walk and informational tour of trail for preparation of the May 25th Run/Walk.
The NRWC (a local land trust), who initiated the 6-foot Kiosk at the trail, along with partnering groups such as Invista, The Sussex Bird Club, PAVE, KKids, Seaford FFA, and Seaford Cross Country have helped maintain and expand the options available at The Vince Morris Trail at Chapel Branch. Many individuals and groups mentioned have continued to update/maintain over the trail over an extended period of time.
For specific questions on this event, please contact Harry Brake at harry.brake@gmail.com. All are invited to be a part of this tribute to Vince Morris and Dr. Betts, as well as continue to expand the programs available to promote an awareness of conservation and education. Three awards for best overall (Male and Female) runners category AND walkers category and top in each age category for Male AND Female will be given (see age breakdowns on application). On the May 11th preliminary tour of the walk/run, attending daughters and mothers will generously receive flowers from Seaford Florist as supplies last in honor of Mother’s Day as well as the advent of this to occur May 25, 2019.
Team/Organization/Department groups are encouraged to participate at a special Team/Organization/Department rate as indicated on registration. Current record holders as an overall group are Sussex Academy at a time of 48:27:66.
