Dear Child Advocate,

We invite you to join us in protecting children by participating in our annual "Stronger Families Safer Kids 5K run/walk. "As the Designated Child Abuse Prevention Council of Ventura County, our 5K promotes our mission of creating safe, healthy, peaceful families. According to the Welfare & Institutions Code 18982 (WIC18982), a child abuse prevention council is a community's council whose primary purpose is to coordinate the community's efforts to prevent and respond to child abuse. The Partnership is a collaborative non-profit organization with over 30 years of experience providing interagency coordination, networking, advocacy, public awareness & education to prevent child abuse, neglect, and family violence across the lifespan.

Our 5K event is on Saturday, May 2, 2020, at the oceanfront Oxnard State Park/ Mandalay Beach. We will be running/walking along the beachside path, noted as one of the top ten beaches in Ventura County.
Your support will make this event a success, and you will be joining hundreds of community members dedicated to keeping children safe.

Why you should join our team and support our event:

"The Economics of Child Abuse: A Study of California," published in March 2019, is a first-of-its-kind report quantifying the economic cost of child abuse to the state of California. The report assesses community risk factors that make families throughout the state vulnerable to abuse.
Total economic burden incurred by the California community for the lifetime costs associated with the victims of child maltreatment in 2017. That same amount could fund 15% of the state's annual operating budget.
• There are nearly 500,000 reports of child abuse in California each year — that's about one report every minute.
• The economic cost to California for the 71,289 victims in 2017 is $19.31 billion — that same amount could send more than 2 million children to preschool.
• Given significant underreporting, the estimated cost incurred because of one year of abuse could be as high as $284.4 billion.
• Community risk factors that make California children and families more vulnerable to abuse include socioeconomic inequality and poverty, lack of adequate and affordable housing, high unemployment rates, homelessness, community violence, substance abuse, social isolation and marginalization, and wildfires and natural disasters.

We believe in strengthening families through early care and education. These are the Five Protective Factors that strengthen families and protect children.

1. Social-Emotional Competence of Children
2. Knowledge of Child Development
3. Concrete Support in Times of Need
4. Social Connections
5. Parental Resilience

Your support is critically needed. Please let us know how you can provide support and keep children safe.
