The Peavine Rail Trail extends from State Street in downtown Marion to the old train trestle south of Baldwin Avenue approximately 2 miles. The current trail has a fine crushed rock surface that has eroded leaving exposed base rock. In addition, there are several places that do not drain well and have washed out in areas that are in need of repair. The city of Marion is applying for $600,000 in NC State Parks funding to make repairs, make surface enhancements, enhance trailheads, and repair two train trestles in order to extend the trail an additional 0.75 miles. The total local match requirement if awarded is $260,000.
