Event: Week One Challenge

WEEK ONE CHALLENGE

Did you know?
• According to Feeding American, 32% of the combined tri-county (St. Charles, Lincoln, and Warren Counties) population faces food insecurity. 49% of those are children.
• In 2020, the Care Service Food Pantry provided groceries to 631 unduplicated individuals – 263 of these individuals were children.
• Food pantries are essential as many households that experience food insecurity do not qualify for federal nutrition programs.
• In the tri-county area, an average of 10.5% of the population faces hunger.
• More than 30,000 people in the tri-county area are living below the poverty line.

Your challenge for the Week One Challenge is to donate at least one item to the Care Service or your local food pantry.

Event: Week Two Challenge

Week Two Challenge

To participate in the Week Two Challenge complete the online activity SPENT to learn more about the tough decisions that face our Care Service clients. This poverty simulation was created several years ago for Urban Ministries of Durnam. It is just as relevant today as when it was created and the decisions you will make while playing the game are a small sample of the tough choices our clients must make every day.

Once you’ve completed the online simulation be sure to enter your participation.

“Why do so few make it out of poverty? I can tell you from experience it is not because some have more merit than others. It is because being poor is a high-risk gamble. The asymmetry of outcomes for the poor is so enormous because it is so expensive to be poor. Imagine losing a job because your phone was cut off or blowing off an exam because you spent the day in the ER dealing with something that preventative care would have avoided completely. Something as simple as that can spark a spiral of adversity almost impossible to recover from. The reality is that when you’re poor, if you make one mistake, you’re done. Everything becomes a sudden-death gamble.” – from Why Poverty is Like a Disease by Christian H. Cooper.

To complete the Week Two Weekly Challenge complete the online poverty simulation at http://playspent.org/html/. Be sure to enter your participation on the de-Feet Hunger event website.

Week Three Challenge

Ever wonder what a family receives from the Care Service Food Pantry each week?

This week you will find out. Typically our Food Pantry clients are able to shop for their own food in our Client Choice Food Pantry. Due to the pandemic we have had to switch our Food Pantry to drive-thru distribution. Our Pantry staff and volunteers put together a shopping cart filled with item that would be given to a family of four this week.

This full shopping cart included:
• Dairy Items: gallon of milk, gallon of orange juice, a dozen eggs, package of American cheese
• Bakery Items: loaf of wheat sandwich bread, loaf of sliced Italian bread, package of burger buns
• Snacks: package of iced cookies, package of donuts, a cherry pie, and a box of strawberry Pop-Tarts Bites, bag of ridges chips
• Produce: Four baking potatoes, three oranges, package of strawberries, one onion, one head iceberg lettuce, one green pepper, package of mushrooms, bag of baby carrots, bag of red delicious apples
• Meat: ¼ pound hard salami, ¼ pound honey ham, ¼ pound swiss cheese, a package of cheese cubes, package of prepared spicy beef crumbles, six fried chicken strips, whole chicken, pound of ground beef, pound of ground pork, 2 ½ pound spiral sliced ham
• Pantry Items: can of chili, can of chili beans, bag of rice, package of lamb jerky, two boxes Jiffy corn muffin mix, box of Triscuit crackers, two cans tomato sauce, can of tomato paste, box of spaghetti, can of cream style corn, bag of chocolate chip cookie mix
• Personal Care Items: four rolls of toilet paper, box of tissues, tube of toothpaste, toothbrush, pack of disposable razors, two deodorants, two bars of soap, shampoo and conditioner, hand lotion

Event: Week Four Challenge

Week Four Challenge

In the first three months of this year the Care Service Street Outreach team made 177 contacts with homeless individuals living on the streets of our tri-county area. Many of these homeless clients must carry everything they own with them.

Your Week Four Challenge is to gather all the things you would want to have with you if you were forced out of your home and had no where to live or sleep. You can only choose to take things that you can carry in a backpack, bag, or piece of luggage. Once you’ve packed your bag or backpack take it with you on a walk/hike – the distance is up to you but remember that the homeless in our community carry their belongings with them all day every day.

Be sure to log in and enter your participation to receive your extra entry in our attendance prize drawing.
