Perkins Family Clinic offers medical and behavioral services to Native and non-Native citizens living in the surrounding areas of Perkins, OK. Perkins Family Clinic Behavioral Health currently offers telehealth and in-person counseling and peer recovery support services for Native and non-Native clients. Native Connections, Circles of Care, SPFRX, TOR, TOOP, and RCORP are several of the grant programs operating within Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma to reduce and prevent substance use and mental health concerns.
The Native Connections grant grant program supports:
Reducing suicidal behavior and substance use among Native youth up to age 24, easing the impacts of substance use, mental illness, and trauma in tribal communities, and supporting youth as they transition into adulthood.
The primary goals of the Circles of Care grant program are to: Plan for the development of a community-based system of care model for children with mental health challenges and their families and develop local capacity and infrastructure to assist tribal communities in obtaining funding and resources to implement a system of care model to improve the mental health and wellness of their children, youth, and families.
The SPF Rx grant program provides an opportunity for states, U.S. territories, pacific jurisdictions, and tribal entities that have completed a Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant (SPF SIG) to target the priority issue of prescription drug misuse. The program is designed to raise awareness about the dangers of sharing medications and work with pharmaceutical and medical communities on the risks of overprescribing to young adults. SPF Rx will also raise community awareness and bring prescription drug abuse prevention activities and education to schools, communities, parents, prescribers, and their patients. In addition, SAMHSA will track reductions in opioid overdoses and the incorporation of Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) data into needs assessments and strategic plans as indicators of the program’s success.
The TOR (Tribal Opioid Response) grant aims to address the opioid crisis in tribal communities by increasing access to culturally appropriate and evidence-based treatment, including medication-assisted treatment (MAT) using one of the three FDA-approved medications for the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD). In addition to focusing on OUD, recipients may also address stimulant misuse and use disorders, including cocaine and methamphetamine. The intent is to reduce unmet treatment need and opioid overdose-related deaths through the provision of prevention, treatment, and recovery support services for OUD and, if so desired, stimulant misuse and use disorders.
The SPTHB serves as a liaison between the National Indian Health Board, (which works closely with Congress and the Senate on Indian Health Policy for Indian Country) and the 44 federally recognized tribes in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Our role is to improve tribal public health outcomes for American Indians through partnerships, advocacy, education, data, and research, as well as training.
