Look Rock Challenge
This is an incredibly unique perhaps once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to run, scramble, climb, crawl, or do whatever it takes to climb over 1500' of elevation from Camp Montvale up to the Great Smoky Mountains Lock Rock Tower approach, approximately 2.5 miles away. NOTE: This is pending permitting. If not granted, you can choose to be transferred to the 6 hour event or have your registration fee (not processing fee) refunded.
The well marked race course turns around just prior to the immediate approach and ascent up the tower to avoid impacting other Park visitors. So...once you are done grabbing your knees, gasping for breath and/or fainting (hopefully no heart attacks!), try to safely get back down the mountain without falling or attempting to win the best blood award...because there isn't one! The overall course includes a few hundred feet of pavement, mostly double track trails, some traversing across the steep mountainside woods with no trail (lots of leaves to help cushion your falls, rocks to make you wish you hadn't fallen, and trees to grab as you slid down the mountain side!), and some single track trail.
This is NOT a PR course or even close to it. Make no mistake! It will be both very difficult and very rewarding. That is why it is called the Look Rock Challenge. Ten dollars of your race fee will go directly to Friends of the Smokies to help support and protect our incredibly beautiful Great Smoky Mountains National Park that we will be extremely privileged to run in during this event. Spots are definitely limited, so sign up now and tell all your peeps.
Get a load of this. There may even be a few super "crazy" people that will attempt BOTH the Look Rock Challenge AND either the 6 hour or 12 hour night run. Will it be you??

6 Hour (Saturday)
If you like some quality time in the woods, then you will like this event. You will follow a 2ish mile loop course through Camp Montvale and the surrounding woods at the base of Chilhowee Mountain. It is NOT flat, but with only approximately 225 cumulative feet of elevation gain per loop, much of it is runnable, if you have the legs and the engine.
The trail consists of a mix of double track dirt and somewhat rocky trails wide enough for two abreast. There are some grassy areas and a bit of asphalt through the camp. There will be one Aid Station in front of the main lodge, next to the start/finish and timing area. It is a great course for beginners and veterans alike, walkers and runners. Crawling is even permitted!
To be an official finisher and score a medal, you only have to complete one 2ish mile loop. How easy is that?! But of course the real goal is to complete as many laps as possible within your 6 hour time limit.
Besides getting to enjoy some quality trail time with all your crazy running peeps, this is one event you can really feel doubly good about. A significant portion of your registration fee and all of the camping, cabin, and RV parking fees go directly to the camp owner, Harmony Family Center, to help with their very worthy adoption programs. So your participation in MC48 will not only potentially be awesome for you, it will also help make a very direct, positive, life changing impact in children’s lives that so desperately need it. So...what are you waiting on? Get signed up now. Then get ready for the MC48 party!
