The EBC Foundation is honored to dedicate the 13th Annual Every Boob Counts 5K to Shawna Camilleri: 

A Story of Early Detection, Courage, and Giving Back

My journey began with a decision that many women can relate to, I considered skipping my annual mammogram. I had no family history of breast cancer, and with three young children and the demands of everyday life, it was easy to let one more thing slip through the cracks.

Thankfully, my doctor encouraged me to keep my appointment.

What I expected to be a routine screening led to additional imaging and, ultimately, a biopsy. For more than a month, I kept the process to myself, not wanting my family to worry before I knew what I was facing. I welcomed the new year surrounded by my husband and friends, holding onto hope that everything would be okay.

Then came the phone call that changed my life: I was diagnosed with low-grade ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), an early-stage form of breast cancer.

I underwent a lumpectomy, but the pathology revealed additional cancer close to my chest wall. My doctors recommended radiation followed by five years of tamoxifen. As a mother of three young children, I found myself asking whether there was a more definitive option—one that would allow me to move forward without the constant fear of what another six-month scan might reveal.

After thoughtful discussions with my medical team, I chose to undergo a double mastectomy.

When the final pathology results came back, my doctor said something I will never forget:

"It's a good thing we chose this. The cancer was throughout the left breast, and ultimately, we would have needed to do this surgery."

The additional cancer had not appeared on imaging or even on an MRI, but it was there.

Today, I am grateful to say that cancer is behind me. I am incredibly thankful for the doctors who guided my care, the unwavering support of my family and friends, and the opportunity to continue living a full and meaningful life.

My story is a powerful reminder that early detection saves lives. A mammogram I almost skipped gave me the chance to watch my children grow up, continue serving my community, and embrace every new day with gratitude.

That is why I am honored to share my journey through the Every Boob Counts 5K. If my experience encourages even one woman to schedule her mammogram, it will have been worth it.

A Heart for Serving Others

Long before her breast cancer diagnosis, serving others was already a central part of Shawna's life.

In 2016, Shawna founded Shawna's Basket Brigade, an initiative dedicated to ensuring local families—including veterans—can gather around a Thanksgiving meal. Thanks to the continued partnership with Runner's Edge and the incredible generosity of the South Florida community, the Brigade has provided Thanksgiving dinners to more than 26,000 people.

The success of Shawna's Basket Brigade is a testament to what can happen when a community comes together with compassion and purpose. Through the support of Runner's Edge, the Boca Raton Police Department, Palm Beach County services, and many other community partners, thousands of families have experienced the warmth and dignity of sharing a holiday meal.

Following the heartbreaking loss of her son, Keenan, Shawna also founded Keenan's Caring Konnections (KCK), a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting bereaved parents and the people who love them.

KCK offers free monthly virtual Coffee Chats where grieving parents can connect in a safe, compassionate environment with others who truly understand their journey. The organization also provides educational workshops for family members, friends, coworkers, and employers, helping them better understand how to support someone experiencing the unimaginable loss of a child.

At its heart, KCK's mission is simple yet profound: to ensure bereaved parents never feel alone and to empower others to provide meaningful, lasting support.

Life Beyond Cancer

When she isn't serving her community, Shawna enjoys spending time with her husband and their three children. Whether she's running, swimming with her kids, traveling with her family, or tending to her garden, she treasures the simple moments that early detection made possible.

This year, we are proud to dedicate the Every Boob Counts 5K to Shawna Camilleri, a woman whose courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to helping others inspire everyone around her.

Her story reminds us that one appointment, one screening, and one decision can change a life.

Meet your Race Directors, Stacey Garbowit and  Karen Marchione.  

In 2011, Stacey founded The EBC Foundation in honor of her mother, Sandy, who bravely battled breast cancer. Inspired by her mother’s strength and determined to prevent other families from experiencing the same loss, Stacey made it her mission to advocate for the powerful message of early detection.   Combining her passion for running with her commitment to awareness, Stacey created the Every Boob Counts 5k to help raise funds for local organizations.  Since then, more than $250k has been donated to local community partners including Susan G. Komen, Experience Camps, Helping Mothers Helping Babies, and Sharsheret where Stacey also serves on the National Board of Directors.

Karen has been an essential and committed partner since the inception of the Every Boob Counts 5k in 2012, donating time to ensure a seamless race-day experience for participants.  After losing her own mother to breast cancer in 2020, Karen deepened her commitment to the cause.  Drawing on her 20+ years of experience as a consumer goods executive, Karen now leads  sponsorship development and social media efforts expanding the reach and impact of the foundation and its efforts.

Together, Stacey and Karen bring passion, dedication, and leadership to ensure the Every Boob Counts 5K continues to make a meaningful difference in the community.
