Raising Funds for Students at Lott Carey School in Leogane, Haiti
When basic food, water, and healthcare needs are met, students like Samantha are able to concentrate on learning when given an opportunity to attend school. Beth and I sponsor Samantha through Haiti Kids School so that she has the books and supplies she needs to learn, along with teachers who make it a safe learning environment, a daily lunch program, and a school nurse, Benson whose job it is to care for students.
My wife Beth and daughter Adria recently traveled to Haiti to work at Lott Carey School where Samantha attends and visit her home where she resides with her father and aunt. They live in a small, one room house without electricity or running water. Samantha was fighting an infection in her foot. Visiting a doctor in Haiti is reserved for the most serious situations, and even then usually only if someone is able to pay. Samantha was able to get medical treatment from Benson, and show us what it’s like to live in her neighborhood.
Haiti is the poorest country in the southern hemisphere and needs are great
- Clean water, health, travel, and communication infrastructure improvement is needed
- The country is riddled with ongoing political strife & protests
- COVID has arrived with virtually no medical equipment available
- Hurricane Laura brought widespread flooding, displacing people from their homes
- Lack of employment opportunities and a high need for education and trade skills
- Still recovering from the devastating earthquake in 2010 that killed 250,000 Haitians and left 5 million injured or homeless.
The epicenter of the earthquake was Leogane, where Samantha and her classmates reside. Your participation in this fundraiser will help us finish building the 9th grade classroom, provide food packs to students when protests or COVID makes it unsafe to get to school, and additional supplies and equipment for Benson and the teachers to do their job.
