Description
he Y Cup Relay is a partnership between the Cheshire elementary schools and the Cheshire Community YMCA. The purpose of the race is to get elementary school students excited about running. It also creates a friendly competition between all of the elementary schools in town promoting school pride.
The Y Cup relay originally started as a part of our Sea Dog 5K road race back in 2012. To help the schools encourage kids to prepare for their mile run test, the Y created a 3 person relay as part of our 5K. Each team member ran a 1 mile leg of the 5K course. At the time of our last race in 2017, we had over 180 kids participating. After a 2 year absence, the Physical Education department at Cheshire Public Schools has asked us to reinstitute the relay!
The Current Y Cup Relay
The Y is again holding the Y Cup Relay as a standalone event. Due to construction at Bartlem Park, the race is being moved to the Cheshire High School Track. Teams of 3 students will each run 1 mile around the fields and track at Cheshire High School. The relay teams will be scored based upon their finish places to determine the winning school. There are separate team divisions for male and female teams of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th graders. The Cheshire public schools and St Bridget School will be participating in the race.
