Our Story

The 525 Story
Nick Savage was 19 years old, and his brother Jack was just 18 on June 14, 2015. On this day, they attended high school graduation parties, celebrating the milestone with all their friends and classmates. It was also the day these two brothers died. The reason for their passing: acute alcohol and oxycodone overdose.

Both boys graduated high school with Honors, and were captain of their high school hockey team their senior years. Nick lead his team to State Runners-up in 2014, and Jack lead his team to earning the title of State Champions in 2015. Nick had already completed a year of college, and was home to spend the summer with the family. Jack was preparing for his first semester.
They chose to drink, and they chose to take a pill when it was offered to them. These choices were mistakes, and my boys paid the ultimate price for them. Our family was changed forever.

As a result, we are choosing to honor our sons, Nick and Jack, with the creation of the 525 Foundation – their hockey numbers were 5 and 25. Our goal is to prevent another family from having to endure the pain of such a tragedy through outreach, education and support.

Description

The 525 Foundation is a Non Profit Organization that was created by Mike and Becky Savage after the loss of their 2 oldest sons Nick and Jack. The organization's mission is to promote awareness, prevention and education around the misuse and abuse of prescription medications. The 525 Foundation has told their story to over 95,000 Parents, Students, Teacher and Community Members across the country in hopes of preventing another family tragedy. Their Drop 2 Stop program has placed 13 permanent medication drop boxes in our local community (Northwest Indiana) offering safe and convenient place to dispose of unused or expired medications. To date our community has the highest concentration of Prescription Drop Boxes per capita nationwide. To date since the Drop 2 Stop Program started in 2018, we have taken back over 6,400 pounds of prescription pills.

Due to COVID-19 the 525 Foundation Annual Gala had to be cancelled this year. In its place we have created this virtual event to bring everyone together. East Coast or West Coast, Mountains or Beaches, City or Country....Run or Walk 5.25k where you want and when you want! Thank you for taking the extra step with us. Proceeds of this virtual race will continue to support the 525 Foundation's efforts in October 2020 for Substance Abuse Prevention Month and moving forward throughout the year.

The 525 Foundation is focused on Prevention, Awareness, and Education around Prescription Opioids and their misuse and abuse. That extra .25 is what helps make our communities a safer place.
