Description
DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this fundraiser is to raise awareness of the importance of not only being able to swim but also learning advanced skills that may enable someone to save a life if needed.
This race was formed in honor of Joshua Caleb Brantley. On June 22, 2014 he was on a tubing outing with friends when he lost his life trying to save a friend. It is unknown if he knew how to swim, but he has 7 remaining siblings, none of which at the time of his death knew how to swim.
There is an obvious disparity in the number of African Americans who can swim compared to other races. According to USA Swimming, if a parent can’t swim, there is only a 19 percent chance that a child in that household will learn to swim.
More than stressing the importance of water safety and knowing how to swim, Moments with Fee is about helping individuals develop life saving skills in the water. Many drownings occur when individuals are around water alone or with family members who are unable to help.
Common literature and research identifies that sixty-four percent of African-American children can not swim. They are found to be drowning at a rate nearly three times higher than their white peers. In the 5-19 age range drownings are stated to be 5.5 times higher for African Americans; jumping to 10 times more for ages 11-12.
Join us June, 22, 2019 as we bring awareness to the importance of water skill and water safety in honor of Fee, who was willing to risk his safety for a friend in need.
