May is National Mental Health Month!
For the last eighteen years, approximately 300 community members have joined our patients and staff in May to help reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. The National Mental Health Association seeks to create awareness about this illness and the possibly disabling consequences of this disease. A way to participate locally and promote good physical and mental health is with the Eastern Shore Hospital Center Auxiliary event.

The challenges of 2020 were accomplished through a virtual race, and 2021 was modified to include a live and virtual race, just prior to Thanksgiving.

In 2022 we again bring you the best of both!  A live, timed 10K & 5K Run or walk event on Saturday, May 7, 2022 and a virtual 10K/ 5K event with results submissions available from May 7 through May 14. During these uncertain time, we encourage you to be aware of and thankful for your mental health!  Participate in person with us on the grounds of the beautiful Hyatt Resort, or from wherever in the world you may be, with your family and friends.

The Eastern Shore Hospital Center celebrates over 100 years of community-linked, recovery-focused care for mental illness. All proceeds directly benefit our patients, residents and special programs.

Participation fees for the race for adults are $25 pre-registration for the 10K run, 5K 100th Anniversary Run/Walk. There is no fee for youth under 12. The fee includes a commemorative tee shirt and race bib, and a chance to win prizes. The price has been reduced in 2022 as we are not providing the indoor hot breakfast. Pre-packaged snacks and water will be available.

The ESHC Auxiliary is a totally volunteer, 501 (c) 3 organization whose sole purpose is to provide patient services at the hospital.  The Auxiliary sponsors many special activities throughout the year. Approximately 69% of ESHC patients are deemed indigent and it is the Auxiliary’s goal to raise $10,000.00 a year in order to give those patients approximately $1.00 per day to use in the center’s café or gift shop.  100% of the proceeds from the Run/Walk will be given directly to our patients and patient programs.
The Eastern Shore Hospital Center us a regional acute-care psychiatric facility, under the jurisdiction of the Maryland Department of Health. The ESHC Auxiliary was chartered in 1952.  As a not for profit organization, our Auxiliary has a parallel mission with the Eastern Shore Hospital Center.  This mission is to provide the highest quality recovery-based continuum adult inpatient and transitional mental health services for eighty patients on the Eastern Shore.  We serve citizens of the counties of Cecil, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Talbot, Caroline, Dorchester, Wicomico, Somerset and Worcester.
The hospital is geographically located in Dorchester County.  However, our primary service area for in hospital patients is the lower shore counties of Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

Virtual Race Info

What is a Virtual Race?

A virtual run means you choose your course and time to run or walk - your place, your pace! Between May 5 & 14 we will be accepting results. You may register for the 10K, 5K or 3K Mile distance.  You can start any time and use the RaceJoy app to track and submit, or use your phone, fitness tracker, or treadmill readout to show us your distance and time.

TRACKING AND SUBMITTING YOUR VIRTUAL RESULTS

Using RaceJoy to track your race and submit your results:

We’ve made it easy to upload your results to the Virtual Event, using RaceJoy.  You’ll need to download the RaceJoy app: https://www.racejoy.net/download (or choose your favorite App provider)  It’s available for your Android or iPhone.

When you’ve downloaded the app, set up your profile (Name, City, Email Address, DOB) so that RunSignUp can let RaceJoy know that you’ve registered for a race with RaceJoy Tracking. You can also set up a Tracking Number (optional) so that your friends and family can send you messages of support while you are completing your virtual race.

Once you have confirmed your race and distance on RaceJoy, that’s all you need to do until you are ready to race!

ON RACE DAY:

The results are open starting on 5/07 through 5/14 so you can run your virtual race and submit your time! Open the app and confirm your race.  Click START TRACKING to let the app know!  You will see a message that tells you to turn off your WiFi on your phone; the app runs solely on cell phone connection.  If you keep the WiFi on it will skew the tracking.

That’s it!  As you complete each mile, RaceJoy will give you an audio status update.  When you have completed your distance the app will let you know your completion time and automatically send your results to RunSignUp for inclusion in the race results.  If for some reason your results do not upload automatically, you will see instructions for uploading them manually.  You can also send a screenshot of your results to andrea@bluecheetahtiming.com

Don't worry, we will be sending out instructions via email shortly before race day!
