Description
The historic town of Cambridge, located on Maryland’s beautiful Eastern Shore, is the birthplace of Harriet Tubman, the extraordinary woman who was a liberator, abolitionist, spy and nurse for the Union Army, advocate for women’s suffrage and national hero. Here in Dorchester County we say that “water moves us”, but it is Harriet Tubman who inspires us.
That is why we have commissioned a statue of Harriet by award-winning sculptor Wes Wofford, to be installed in front of the Court House. This was once a space where enslaved people were auctioned, and the site of her first rescue. She would go on to lead over 70 enslaved people from Dorchester County on dangerous journeys to their freedom. Guided by the North Star, and enabled by courageous volunteers and safe houses along the Underground Railroad, she drew on her deep faith and determination to free her people.
This unique bike ride will follow the part of the UGRR through scenic marsh and farmlands, with rest stops at historic sites. Cyclists will experience Harriet Tubman’s journeys, while helping to raise funds for the statue which will be installed in September, 2022. This ride is one of the many community efforts, coordinated by Alpha Genesis CDC, to raise money and awareness of our rich heritage.
We hope that you will join us as we leave from Cambridge South-Dorchester High School and travel along the same routes that Harriett would have!
