Description
Wilderness Walk for Warriors is a (not for profit) organization comprised of all volunteers who are dedicated to assisting veterans , service members and or their families; as well as honoring our Maine fallen heroes.
Each year in July, Wilderness Walk for Warriors forms a team that hikes through the 100 Mile Wilderness (Monson to the top of Mt. Katahdin) totalling 120 miles. Team members raise funds through pledges and various fundraising events. In turn, the funds raised are used to directly assist Veterans/Service Members, and or their families.
Wilderness Walk for Warriors is truly a unique organization blending civilians and military for the benefit of those who have served our country. 100% of any money raised by this organization goes directly back , a dollar earned or donated to Wilderness Walk for Warriors is a dollar spent on our Veterans/Service members.
This year’s hike is named "The Flags of Honor". Each team member will be carrying a Flag of Honor attached to their hiking staff. In 2017, we are expecting over two dozen hikers to undertake this extremely difficult endeavor. This is a ten day hike through the most difficult section of the Appalachian trail without any source of re-supply. With the goal to raise money for the great people who have served, and are serving, to protect our freedom and way of life.
This Memorial Day (May 29th) please come out and support our organization so we can continue to support and honor our Veterans and service members by participating in our second annualWilderness Walk for Warriors Memorial Day 5K Run or Walk.
The Honor Run Half will precede the 5K Run/Walk and is the opening to "The County Remembers". Honor Run Half is FREE, however, donations are gladly accepted. Participants are encouraged to wear patriotic attire. All participants will begin at the Blue Moose Restaurant in Monticello, run the 13.1 miles down the old dirt railbed (course is unsupported and not certified in distance), into Houlton. Once in Houlton , each of the dedicated runners will accept flag transfer from Maine Army National Guard Members. Each Flag will have a pictorial representation of an Aroostook County, Maine service member who has made the Ultimate Sacrifice since September 11, 2001. As a group, the runners and flags will then be escorted by the Patriotic Motorcycle Group to the Millar Civic Center. The flags will then be displayed as "Flags of Honor", officially beginning the day of honoring and remembering, aptly named "The County Remembers".
Please don't forget to sign up for the 5K Run or Walk! https://runsignup.com/Race/ME/Houlton/WildernessWalkforWarriorsMemorialDay5K
Again, PLEASE note: 1. the course is on an uneven dirt surface that used to be a railbed and has shared use with all terrain vehicles; 2. the course is not supported; 3. the course is not certified in length; 4. the goal is to run as a group; 5. this is a POINT to POINT run, and at this time, you are responsible for getting back to the start.
