Description

HEALTHY TRIBES Run On The Rims

The Indian Health Service Office of Healthcare Programs at the Billings Area Office under the Behavioral Health & Health Promotion Disease Prevention departments are partnering with the Rocky Mountain Tribal Leaders Council to promote the Healthy Tribes Run on the Rims Challenge for 2022. This event will occur during RMTLC's: Our Resiliency is Our Strength- A New Era in Tribal Public Health II August 17 & 18, 2023.

Approximately 5,900 American Indians/Alaska Natives live in the city of Billings area. With the Healthy Tribes Run on the Rims, we aim to engage and empower individuals and our community to choose healthy behaviors, and make changes that reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases and other morbidities. The World Health Organization defines health promotion as, “The process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. It moves beyond a focus on individual behavior towards a wide range of social and environmental interventions.” Modifiable risk behaviors include, for example, tobacco use, poor eating habits, and lack of physical activity, which contribute to the development of chronic disease. Something as simple , as taking a walk or going for a run can be a voluntary act, which will, result in a positive behavior changes and focuses on specific efforts aimed at reducing development and severity of chronic  diseases and other morbidities.

With this run, we utilize this event as a platform to promote increased knowledge surrounding our overall health. We will have various American Indian/Alaska Native Tribal members, professionals from various helping agencies and individuals from the city of Billings and surrounding areas signing-up to participate in Healthy Tribes Run on the Rims Challenge. Out of the I.H.S. Office of Healthcare programs we continually want to promote information and education for the community members in the area of suicide prevention & awareness, mental health resources, drug and alcohol prevention, education, treatment & recovery as well as family resources. The overall mission of the Indian Health Service (I.H.S.) is to raise the physical, mental, social and spiritual health of American Indians and Alaska Natives to the highest level. As part of the I.H.S. mission, we want to support tribal governments and urban Indian communities in the development and administration of comprehensive health care delivery systems that meet the needs of Indian people. We are delighted that programs both tribal, urban and at the federal level can work towards a common set of goals to promote health & wellness among our Native people. Please join us for the 4th Annual Healthy Tribes Run on the Rims Challenge 2022.
