Welcome to the Greater Long Island Running Club's inaugural virtual race!
Have you always wanted to race with GLIRC but you live too far away? Or maybe you miss racing with us because a new job took you across the country. Perhaps you race with us all the time, but you're sidelined by canceled in-person events.Now's your time to shine!
Run safely and responsibly in your own neck of the woods, and choose one of three distances that's comfortable (or challenging!) for you at your convenience between now and June 30th, 2020. In doing so, you will not only keep the spirit of the running community alive during these times, but also (and more importantly, we think!) raise funds for the workers who have put their all into keeping the rest of us healthy and safe.
The primary goal here is to HAVE FUN and stay connected with the running community! Enjoy your race, and be sure to tag us in your results! We are @runglirc on Instagram, and use hashtag #FootstepsForTheFrontlines and, you may find our Facebook public page HERE. If you are a current GLIRC member, be sure to join our members-only Facebook group to talk about the race and share ideas with other members.
You will also be supporting small, local handmade businesses with your miles. If you choose the medal option, you will be receiving a beautifully-designed and assembled handmade wooden race medal by Ragged Cuts to commemorate your participation.
All registered participants will receive this unique GLIRC head scarf/neck gaiter as a giveaway. Perfect to wear as a mask when social distancing, to wrap around your head or to wear around your neck in the winter!
It is important that each entrant follows protocol for their jurisdiction regarding running and, most importantly, takes care of themselves. Please adhere to all local laws and guidelines that apply in your area regarding safety with COVID-19. Social distancing and/or masks are vital at this time. The current guidelines for the CDC regarding COVID-19 risk and prevention are found HERE. Please make choices that will keep you and others healthy and safe. If outdoor running is not permitted, it is fully within the rules of the virtual race to use a treadmill, so feel free to do that if it is a safer option for you. Give yourself sufficient time to rest and recover after all physical activities, and listen to your body. If you feel sick, consult a health practitioner and avoid physical activities until cleared.
If you are running in public, please adhere to all traffic safety laws in your area. Run on sidewalks where possible, and face oncoming traffic on road shoulders where sidewalks are not available so that you can see what is coming toward you at any given time. Consider wearing no headphones, or above-ear headphones that are not noise-canceling, so that you may hear what is going on around you.
You may submit your results for this race through June 30, 2020. Click here to reach the page where you can submit your virtual results. You can also go to your RunSignUp profile, go to your Upcoming races, and click on Submit Virtual Results.

A portion of the proceeds from the race will be donated to the Northwell Covid 19 Emergency Fund. With continued support from our communities, Northwell can continue to advance care. “From the outset, our team members and communities reached out asking how to support our frontline caregivers, patients and research. Now, more than ever, the support from our communities is helping us care for the people that need us most,” says Brian Lally, senior vice president and chief development officer at Northwell Health.
For this reason, Northwell has established the COVID-19 Emergency Fund and a dedicated community fundraising website to support Northwell’s response efforts. Donations to this fund will allow our healthcare heroes to continue their critical work, including:
* conducting research that will discover new therapies and protocols in the fight against COVID-19;
* providing behavioral health services to frontline healthcare workers;
* expanding telemedicine programs to treat seniors and high-risk patients who are isolated due to the virus; and
* caring for every patient struggling with trauma, anxiety, isolation and grief.
“With the support of people in our communities, we can fulfill our mission to tackle the most difficult healthcare challenge of our time,” added Mr. Lally. “Every donation, big or small, makes a difference. Together, we can beat this invisible enemy.”
