Olympic Oktoberfest 5K / 10K

Thu October 1 - Sat October 31 Port Angeles, WA 98362 US

Description

2020 is the Wurst!!  Oktoberfest in Munich was cancelled in 2020 due to covid-19 (nooooooo!). In recognition of this unfortunate circumstance, Port Angeles will continue the race and beer tradition (more on that below), virtual-style, with the Olympic Oktoberfest 5K / 10K Run/Walk. Peninsula Adventure Sports (who bring you OAT Run, GOAT Run, Big Hurt and other great events) is proud to partner with Angeles Brewing and Taproom for this great new event.

Oktoberfest in Munich is the world's largest folk festival. But did you know it started as a horse race? On October 12, 1810, the citizens of Munich were invited to celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The party organizer had the idea of celebrating a wedding a little differently, and the couple was honored with a huge horse race.

Being fun people, the citizens of Munich wanted to continue the tradition in future years, and the festivities were recreated in 1811 as a celebration of Bavaria and Bavarian agriculture. Over the next decade, a parade and more games (like tree climbing and bowling) were added, and of course the tasting of food and beer. Attendance grew and by 1819 it was determined that Oktoberfest would be an annual event.

Today (except not in 2020 - Wurst Year Ever), Oktoberfest draws around six million visitors annually. Each year, it continues to break new records from the quantity of beer consumed through to the amount of chicken devoured (chicken?). In 2013, 6.4 million people visited Oktoberfest, and visitors were served 6.7 million litres of beer.

So how will we celebrate here in Port Angeles? For one thing, unlike the original Oktoberfest, we will leave out the horses for our event! Your dog might want to participate with you, though :)

How it works:

  • Sign up for Olympic Oktoberfest - the entry fee is $25.
  • Run or walk your favorite 5K or 10K course sometime between October 1st and October 31st (yes we know Oktoberfest is traditionally celebrated in late September, but go along with us here...)
  • Visit Angeles Brewing and Taproom in Port Angeles, Washington to collect your reward! This includes an Angeles Brewing and Taproom glass (for you to keep), filled with a special Oktoberfest beer (for you to drink), a stainless steel Olympic Oktoberfest coaster (with built in bottle opener), and an official "2020 Wurst Year Ever" sticker to proudly display in sad solidarity of canceled beer events everywhere. Angeles Brewing and Taproom is located in downtown Port Angeles at 116 N Lincoln St and their hours of operation are: Tuesday-Saturday 3pm-9pm and Sunday 3pm-8pm.

Bonus rewards! Log your results on the Olympic Oktoberfest RunSignUp website (and upload a photo too if you choose to - we would love to see your photos!) and you will be eligible for door prizes! Each week we will choose one or more names off the online results list and contact the winner(s) about their prize!

To log your results, click on "Manage Registration" on your confirmation email, click on "Submit Virtual Results" to get started. You have the option to:

  • Upload from your device
