WHY OUR PARNTERS MATTER!

Across the United States, one in five children grows up in poverty. In West Virginia, that statistic is one in four, or nearly 100,000 kids. Because of circumstances beyond their control, WV children are struggling.

YOU can help by joining a statewide campaign conducted by Shoes That Fit and Save the Children to provide new athletic shoes and other essential needs for West Virginia’s most at-risk children in rural parts of the state. Amidst the current health crisis, the need is urgent, and, thanks to seed money raised through the virtual race in August 2021, we are already in contact with WV schools to coordinate shoe deliveries.

To help us launch the WV campaign, the Friends of Clay Center, a group of young professionals committed to the success of the Clay Center and its STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math) education programs, has, for the second year in a row, raised funds to support Shoes That Fit and provide new, name-brand athletic shoes for West Virginia kids.

As part of our annual Friends of Clay 5K, the group raised thousands of dollars to the support the Clay Center’s education mission, in addition to raising $12,500 for Shoes That Fit. These funds were matched, dollar for dollar, by Courtney Clay Peraza, the daughter of Lyell Clay, one of the Clay Center’s pre-eminent benefactors, bringing the total campaign contribution to $25,000 – enough to serve 1,000 West Virginia children.

Please help keep the momentum going and join Shoes That Fit, Save The Children, and the Friends of Clay Center to provide West Virginia’s children with some of their most basic needs, including a pair of properly fitting athletic shoes. Your gift will have a dramatic impact, helping preserve a child’s dignity, increase their confidence, and let them run, play, skip, and just be a kid.

Shoes That Fit

This year, the Clay Center is proud to partner with Shoes That Fit, an organization tackling one of the most visible signs of poverty in America by giving kids in need brand new athletic shoes, so they can attend school with dignity and joy. Through our partnership, Shoes That Fit will work with local schools to identify those in need. The Clay Center knows that confidence impacts learning – and we want to help kids improve their self-esteem and participation at school by eliminating one of poverty’s most visible and debilitating marks.

Runners, sponsors and supporters of the cause have the option to donate shoes at $25/pair. And, thanks to a matching gift, all donations up to $25,000 will be matched dollar-for-dollar.

With your help, up to 2,000 West Virginia schoolchildren could receive new shoes this year!
