Description
Community organizers are excited to announce the first annual 5k Run for the Old Quindaro Museum and Underground Railroad Museum.
The race will start at 7:30 am, at the Quindaro Ruins Overlook, at 3507 N. 27th Street. The race will be timed, though non-competitive runners and walkers are encouraged to attend.
Participants and their supporters are invited to stay after the race for performances from local artists and congregations along the route and at the Quindaro Community Center. Local vendors will be present to sell concessions and services. Alcohol use or sale at any event venues is prohibited.
Proceeds from the event will benefit non-profit groups that are helping to preserve the amazing history of the Quindaro area. Designated by the National Registry of Historic Places as an archaeological district, Quindaro Township was founded by abolitionists wanting to protect Kansas’ status as an anti-slavery territory. Before the Civil War, Quindaro became a waypoint on the Underground Railroad and hosted the first institute of higher learning for freed slaves west of the Mississippi (Western University).
Persons interested in volunteering for the run should attend the next planning meeting at The Vernon School at 27th and Sewell in Kansas City, KS on April 23rd at 2pm. For vendor or sponsorship inquiries, please contact the run coordinators at quindarofreedomrun@gmail.com.
