Mary Payton is a beautiful 7 year old girl who was diagnosed at the end of January 2008 with Late Infantile Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (LINCL), sometimes referred to as Batten Disease (www.bdsra.org). Over time, children affected by LINCL suffer mental impairment, worsening seizures and progressive loss of sight and motor skills. Eventually children become blind, bedridden and are unable to communicate. Unfortunately at present, it is always fatal. It usually ends in death between the ages of 8 and 12. It is a rare disorder, affecting only about 450 children in the country. Mary Payton is still fighting with everything she has, but her chances depend on your support. There is hope! Researchers at Cornell University have developed a gene replacement therapy that the FDA has approved. This treatment has proven to stop the progression of the disease and in some cases has shown children regaining function they have lost. While clinical trials are scheduled to start soon, these will start too late for Mary Payton and other children like her. The researchers have agreed to provide treatment for these children when private funds can be raised! The cost of treatment is approximately 2.5 million dollars to treat 5 desperate children. We are racing against the clock to raise this money seeing that the loss of function in these children happens so quickly. A cure is finally in sight! Make sure Mary Payton doesn’t miss this Miracle of an opportunity!
