Loring Air Force Base was near and dear to so many before closing in 1994.  For those who served, it was their home away from home.  While the winters could be long and cold, the hearts of all were warm.  From the 42nd Air Base Wing, to B-52G Stratofortresses and KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft, to the North River Depot- Loring has a rich history of excellence.

The Moose Is Loose At Loring pays homage to the men and women who answered the call of their Nation.  This unique event offers a 5K Run or Walk and 10K Run on Runways 1R/19L and 1L/19R!  That's right, you'll be able to run the runway where these historic aircraft once took flight, and without vehicular traffic!  You will receive a commemorative shirt, personalized bib, awesome finishers medal, chip timing, and an awesome race experience!

Shirts are available for the first 100 registrants on a first come sizing basis. Additional shirts are available through the Store.

Maj. Loring distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. While leading a flight of four F-80 type aircraft on a close support mission, Maj. Loring was briefed by a controller to dive-bomb enemy gun positions which were harassing friendly ground troops. After verifying the location of the target, Maj. Loring rolled into his dive bomb run. Throughout the run, extremely accurate ground fire was directed on his aircraft. Disregarding the accuracy and intensity of the ground fire, Maj. Loring aggressively continued to press the attack until his aircraft was hit. At approximately 4,000 feet, he deliberately altered his course and aimed his diving aircraft at active gun emplacements concentrated on a ridge northwest of the briefed target, turned his aircraft 45 degrees to the left, pulled up in a deliberate, controlled manuever, and elected to sacrifice his life by diving his aircraft directly into the midst of the enemy emplacements. His selfless and heroic action completely destroyed the enemy gun emplacement and eliminated a dangerous threat to United Nations ground forces. Maj. Loring's noble spirit, superlative courage, and conspicuous self-sacrifice in inflicting maximum damage on the enemy exemplified valor of the highest degree, and his actions were in keeping with the finest traditions of the U.S. Air Force.

Loring is a place near and dear to our hearts. Many loved Loring and loved the times they had and shared at Loring. It was a city within itself. A place were people made life long friends, where they lived and worked, cried and laughed.  It was also a place people hated due to its extreme temperatures, the northern tier area in which it was housed and because it was so rural. This reason made Loring that much better due to its outdoor activities and the snow, it really depended on who you were and your lifestyle. That truly was what determined whether you loved Loring AFB, or hated it.

But ultimately, Loring is a place that even today, draws people back from all across America. They come to share it with their family, their friends and to reminisce on what was once the height of their lives and careers. Cold or not, frozen or eaten by bugs, we loved Loring!
