Description
The firefighter pack test, formally known as the work capacity test, is a physical fitness test for wildland firefighters. The pack test is intentionally stressful as it tests the capacity of muscular strength and aerobic endurance of the firefighter. There are three levels of tests known as arduous, moderate, and light. All federal and most state and private agencies use the pack test.
In support of the Wildland Firefighters, we've got our version here, for you to put yourself to the test, make yourself proud, earn some swag, and raise money for the Wildland Firefighters.
The time caps below mark the time needed to “pass” the pack-test. We encourage you to take on the challenge you see fit. Not finished with distance within the allotted time frame? Keep going! We believe in you :)
Here are your challenge options:
Arduous / Pack Test / 3-mile hike with 45-pound pack in 45 minutes. Swag: backpack, shirt, buff, medal
Moderate / Field Test / 2-mile hike with 25-pound pack in 30 minutes. Swag: backpack, shirt, medal
Traditional / Walk or Run a 5K/ Your choice of location/ Take as long as you like! Swag: Shirt, medal
How to choose your test:
Arduous: involves field work calling for above-average endurance and superior conditioning. All firefighters are required to perform arduous duty. Firefighters, strike team leaders, line scouts, and others assigned arduous duty must be prepared to work in steep terrain; and in extreme temperatures, altitude, and smoke-while maintaining reserve work capacity to meet unforeseen emergencies.
Moderate: involves field work requiring complete control of physical faculties and may include considerable walking, standing and lifting 25-50 lbs. Safety officers and fire behavior analysts are examples of moderate duty positions.
Traditional: You will do what you can to support!

About The Wildland Firefighter Foundation and Spouses & Partners of Wildland Firefighters
The Wildland Firefighter Foundation came together as a group of volunteers in 1994, shortly after the Storm King tragedy. With dedication and lots of volunteer work, plans were developed for a national monument to honor firefighters, a dream that was realized in May 2000. The Wildland Firefighter Foundation was officially formed in the spring of 1999. Since 1999, the Foundation’s main focus has been to provide emergency support services and funds to the families of wildland firefighters, seriously injured or killed in the line of duty.
Spouses and Partners of Wildland Firefighters is an online community of women in committed relationships with wildland firefighters. We empower the women in our group to thrive amid the challenges that are inherent in the crazy wildland life. From our beginning on June 29, 2012, we have worked closely with the Wildland Firefighter Foundation to raise funds to support their programs and to date have raised over $50,000 for the Foundation.
