Description

The brain child of the local police chief, this fun event has two goals in mind:

  1. Have fun
  2. Explore the trail and waterways that the area has to offer

The Chief's Challenge is a fun, non-timed event which consists of an approx. 15 mile bike, 7 mile paddle and 7.5 mile run. The event can be done as an individual or relay team. The actual bike course may vary from 11 to 15 miles depending on the final route, which will be finalized mid-August and based on current road conditions.

Participants will begin at Bailey Park and bike to Saylor Park where their kayaks will be staged and waiting. They will then kayak the Kalamazoo River to Bridge Park. From there, participants will run the Calhoun County Trailway, connect to the Linear Path and finish at Bailey Park. Participants are expected to follow all road rules and stop at crossings. There will be no road closures as this is a fun, non-timed event.

Participants will need to drop off their kayaks the morning of the event at Saylor Park, where they will be supervised until their arrival on bike. All transportation of bikes and kayaks back to the finish at Bailey Park will be provided. Equipment will be manned and supervised at all times.

Participants in need of a kayak should contact info@cerealcityathletics.com. A limited number of kayaks are available on a first come, first serve basis.

All participants will receive a 1/4 zip Chief's Challenge jacket, course support including bike and kayak transportation, and a post race lunch.

Relay teams: when registering as a relay team, the first person to register will need to set up a team name when registering. The other team members will join the team when registering. We have set up relay teams so that individuals can register separately, pricing is PER PERSON, not per team.

The Goodies

Each participant will receive a 1/4 zip Chief's Challenge pullover, equipment transportation (bike, kayak and gear) back to the finish, mid-event snacks and a picnic lunch at the finish. Not to mention, you get major bragging rights for completing in a one-of-a-kind event and that's priceless!

The Logistics

Participants will be responsible for dropping their kayaks off at Saylor Park the morning of the event. Kayaks can be dropped off beginning at 7:30 am. Equipment will be manned and not left unattended until your arrival by bike.

Upon arrival at Saylor Park, you will drop off your bike and biking gear in exchange for your kayak and kayaking gear. Bikes will be transported back to the finish to await your arrival.

Once docking at Bridge Park we will take charge of your kayaks as you take charge of the run along the Calhoun County Trailway. Kayaks will be transported to the finish for you.

At the finish you will be greeted by your adoring fans; your bike and kayak. A picnic lunch will be provided to refuel.

The Equipment

Biking: All bike types are welcome for this event, including tandems. (If participating on a tandem each rider will need to be a registered participant). Helmets are REQUIRED. All rides must follow the rules of the road.

Kayaking: Due to transportation purposes, this event is limited to kayaks only. Life vests are REQUIRED. We have a limited number of kayaks to offer participants who wish to participate but do not own one. They are available on a first come, first serve basis. Registrants will need to provide their own life vests. If in need of a kayak, please contact us at info@cerealcityathletics.com

Running: Shoes or no shoes, however your feet like it best. The Calhoun County Trailway is a gravel trail, free of major roots and obstruction. No trail shoes are neccesary, but may be used if you prefer.

Relay Teams

Relay team pricing is set up PER PARTICIPANT. We have simplified the registraiton process so that each team member can register themselves and there is no need to deal with paying back the team captian your portion. For example, a two-person realy team will have two separate teammates register at $55 each for a team total cost of $110.

The first person to register for each team will need to create the team by creating a team name when registering. Once your registration is complete, let your team mate(s) know the team name and they simply select that team to join when registering themselves.

Relay teams will be responsible for transportation of people from one leg of the event to the next and back to the finish. We can haul equipment; not people.
