The 1st Annual Kristen's Krew 5K is part of a full weekend of exciting events honoring Kristen McCartney and her perseverance - and raising money for the Kristen McCartney Perseverance Scholarship. Funds raised will help young women reach their college goals.

Kristen McCartney was a beloved daughter, sister, and friend, who passed away in 2021. Kristen had a form of epilepsy that was not fully controlled by medication, and could be triggered by sunlight. That never stopped her from living the life she wanted. She played competitive soccer until she went to college, worked a part time job, spent time with friends and family traveling and creating all kinds of memories.  

To honor her memory, the Kristen McCartney Perseverance Scholarship will support female students from her home state of North Carolina. It takes passion and perseverance to pursue upper-level education. This scholarship will recognize those traits in others, fueling their excitement and encouraging their futures. Students will be selected based on academic excellence, community involvement, and inclusivity.

Female high school juniors and seniors in North Carolina are eligible to apply if they have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and have volunteer or non-profit experience. To apply, write about what you are passionate about, how you demonstrate perseverance in your life and how you will use your education to make a difference.

When is Kristen's Krew 5K?

The 1st annual Kristen's Krew 5K will be held in early October - the perfect setting for a 5K run in the Charlotte area. Kristen's Krew 5K is part of a weekend-long celebration honoring Kristen McCartney.

Who can run Kristen's Krew 5K?

EVERYONE! The 5K is open to the public. Even if you weren't lucky enough to know Kristen, we welcome you to join as we celebrate the spirit of perseverance. We're going to have a lot of fun and look forward to the Kristen's Krew 5K becoming a community-wide celebration. All paces are welcome!

What's the course for Kristen's Krew 5K?

The majority of our 5K course runs along the Moss Creek segment of the Hector Henry Greenway. The 5K will start and finish at the Harris Road Middle School. This section of the the Hector Henry Greenway is a paved surface and crosses wetland areas along the Rocky River.

Is there a time limit?

No! When we say all paces are welcome, we mean it. Since the course runs along the greenway and surrounding neighborhood streets, runners/walkers can be comfortable moving at their own pace.
