COVID-19 - Event Cancellation

Dear RunTimeRaces Community,

After much consideration and consultation with multiple disciplines within our community, our team has made the decision to cancel all 2020 RunTimeRaces events. We have concluded that hosting these events poses an undeniable risk to the public and we’re not willing to take that risk. We also took into consideration the associated liability, economic impact, and our civic responsibility to do our part to help slow the spread of COVID-19 during this pandemic. We will be communicating with our affiliates during the following weeks regarding this difficult decision.

Sally's Story

Sally Marie Sowers was born on June 23rd, 2000 to a loving mother and father.  She was an extremely happy baby and immediately became her parent’s world. Sally was blessed with a younger brother, Jay, in September of 2002.  They were instantly the best of friends. She could often be found at one of Jay’s baseball or basketball games cheering on him and his teammates.  Sally always had an extremely sunny disposition. She had an infectious smile and giggle and she shared both with everyone she met.   Her carefree attitude and her goofy sense of humor could brighten up any room. This made Sally extremely popular with her peers and cherished by her family.   Sally had a unique way of making everyone feel important and happy to be around her.

Sally attended high school at University Christian High School in Hickory, NC.  Sally was an A student and a member of the National Honor Society.  She participated in numerous activities such as Model United Nations, Envirothon, and the Spanish Club. Sally excelled in all of her academics but had a passion for math, science, and computer science.  Athletically, Sally was a two-year starter and co-captain of the ladies tennis team.  Sally and her classmates started the team her freshman year.  They developed from not winning matches to qualifying for the state playoffs her sophomore year.  This past year the team used Sally as their inspiration and finished second in the state.

In Sally’s spare time, she enjoyed being with her friends, her family, and two French Bulldogs, Gigi and Rosie. Sally was an avid tennis player and was so excited about her junior season. She was fun loving and found joy in simple things, such as blowing bubbles to her dogs and working on her Chaco tan.  Sally was a fierce friend and had a wonderful group of peers she enjoyed spending time with. They enjoyed going to the movies together and eating cheese dip at Mexican restaurants. Sally loved to bake cupcakes with her Grandmother, Mema. And she famously bought each of her grandparents and her closest friends matching t-shirts saying, “SALLY IS MY FAVORITE”. One month before this tragedy, Sally had gotten her driver’s license. She took great pride in her new car as she decorated it in Harry Potter stickers and loaded Taylor Swift CDs in the stereo. Her brother’s last positive memory of Sally is of the two of them riding alone together in her car and dancing to a song at a stoplight before she got sick.  Sally suffered from a brief illness that cut her life tragically short in July of 2016. Her passing has left a huge void in the lives of everyone who knew her.

Shortly after Sally’s passing, her family established the Sally Marie Sowers Scholarship Fund.  Currently the fund is valued at over $170,000 through money raised by family and friends. UCHS has also remembered Sally by dedicating a classroom and the student athlete of the year award in her memory. Affectionately the UCHS Class of 2018 dedicated a bench and tree in loving memory of Sally and made her an honorary graduate. Money raised by the “Color Me Sally” Run will go to the University Christian High School building fund in loving memory of Sally Marie Sowers. Sally is a luminary to many and her family hopes to honor her memory and the impact she had on her community and everyone who knew her. Her family is forever grateful for the continued and unwavering support of their friends and community.
