Kids Fun Run Food Drive - Lyndhurst, NJ

Did you know?.....900,000 children in New Jersey rely on food banks as their main source of food? Did you know?...12% of children in Bergen County struggle with food insecurity, and 45% of them do not qualify for government food assistance leaving local food banks as an important resource. It is also important to be aware that for the first time in over 100 years, children in America now have a lower life expectancy than their parents due to poor diets and lack of exercise. For this reason, in accordance with the Lyndhurst Parks and Recreation Department, we are organizing a fun run food drive as a way to encourage children to get outside, be active, learn about a healthy balanced diet and to support their local food bank. The registration fee for this specific event is reserved to TWO healthy non-perishable food items to be donated the day of the event. Since the emphasis for this event is also on nutrition and health, we ask that you purchase the following for donation: Whole wheat pastas and cereal, low sodium canned goods, no sugar added canned/packaged fruit and fruit juices, and whole grain wild or brown rice or other grains. The day of the event will include a brief nutrition presentation by myself, Kaiti Rodriguez, MS, CCN (Clinical Nutritionist and adjunct professor at Rutgers), a brief physical activity presentation by Sashal Hagan, Third year DPT Student at Rutgers, and will be followed by a fun run for ages K-12. Participants will run a predetermined course by age group with the emphasis being on team and fun! Each participant will receive a T-shirt of the event and fruit and water will also be available. Additional T-shirts will be available for purchase for $15 on the day of the event. All proceeds will be donated to the Lyndhurst Food Bank.
