Description

The Race for Border Justice 5K offers a fast course for competitive runners & a pleasant walk for supporters of our mission:  to raise funds for the National Immigrant Justice Center.  The accurately measured 5K course departs from the parade grounds at the Ft. Bayard Historic District near Santa Clara, New Mexico.  The mostly flat course--familiar to those who ran the old Ft. Bayard Wilderness Run--combines trail and road, with a fast asphalt finish on Officers Row.  Count on following a well-marked course staffed by friendly volunteers--& since this is our first annual Race for Border Justice, race winners can count on setting a course record as well.

2025 Race Awards

Maybe your only competition is yourself--but, really, these race awards are worth training for!  Robin Parsons trophy bowls go to the fastest female & male finishers; medals go to winners in 4 race categories--Youth, Prime, Masters, & Supermasters.

Course Map

Here's the Race for Border Justice 5K course map that our race marshals use.  Note that the race starts (S) about 100 meters from race registration at the New Deal Theater near the intersection of Camino del Cielo & Camino Foresta.  (Street names are not always obvious at Ft. Bayard; you may want to consult Google Maps for reference.)  Runners & walkers pass by Yucca Lodge, head southwest down Officers Row (Camino el Centro), & then turn right past the old Quonset hut.  (Fear not:  we have marshals posted at these key early turns.)  Runners head uphill on Camino del Viento, & then make their first right onto Camino de las Estrellas.  Here runners begin a short trip through the old soldier's quarters--"the ghost town"--& if this all sounds complicated, know that on race day, course marshals will be stationed at key points to help guide you along through the town.  Once you reach Camino del Cielo, you will make a left turn, then soon another left onto Camino de la Cienega, once again heading southwest.  Make a right turn--staying on paved Camino del Cielo--until you reach Camino del Viento again, where you will make another right turn & head past the National Cemetery.  Thus, the first 8/10 of a mile will be run on pavement.

At the northeast corner of the National Cemetery is a narrow passageway alongside a gate--and a friendly course marshal--who will shuttle runners onto the trail portion of the race.  Here runners will make the most important turn in the race:  Veer left at the fork!  Now, for more than a mile, runners will be tearing along sandy trail--much of it a rutted dirt road, through the old golf course & then through the Mangas Bowmen Archery Range (fear not; no archers will be present!).  A marshal will guide runners through the archery range; they follow a well-marked dirt road till they pass through another gate, where they will make an all-important right turn--greet yet another marshal--& run past the old citizens cemetery toward Ft. Bayard Medical Center.  At the end of the dirt road, runners will make a left turn & head toward the gatehouse, where they will make a left turn & return to pavement for a long straight-stretch finish.  Again, a marshal (& signs & flagging) will guide you to the finish line.

The race finishes (F) on Calle El Centro--specifically, on the once grand boulevard known as Officers Row.  Here, our scoring team will help you tear off your bib tag (bearing your racing number) & score your finish.

Again--you don't need to memorize these details; they're here for people who want to preview the course, either physically or mentally.  There will be orange flagging, red-&-yellow arrow signs, & course marshals to guide you on race day.  If you want a map-free tour of the course, know that most of the course will be flagged Friday morning before the race.  Above all, enjoy the journey--& at the same time, if you're a fierce competitor, know that you will be expertly guided around the course for a personal record!
