Description

Over the past decade, Puerto Rico has faced crisis after crisis as it relates to hurricanes, politics, and economic strife that has caused many residents to flee the island or be faced with living in destroyed or severely damaged homes and at times without drinking water. The devastation laid at the feet of the island has been far reaching and impacted its most important commodity, the children. As a result, the islands education system is in dire straights as it has closed more than a third of their schools and undergone severe educational budget cuts.

Due to the issues that Puerto Rico has faced, brothers of Lambda Sigma Upsilon Latino Fraternity, Inc created a service trip in 2023 to help raise funds and awareness to the issues that face the children and will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Puerto Rico. To help fund that trip we have created a virtual 5K with all the profits being donated to the BGCPR. The year we are working towards getting over 60 volunteers to travel to PR for this service trip from other Greek Organizations.

The BGCPR is a great organization to work with because they offer a safe and creative place where we help develop children and youth to become leaders who achieve their academic, personal and professional goals. They provide them with the necessary tools to create and / or obtain a satisfactory job so that they can attain economic security.
• 9 out of 10 BGCPR participants live in poverty
• 81% of our participants families have annual incomes of less than $15,000.
• Living in poverty means that our youth grow up in families that do not have enough income to cover their basic needs of quality education, food, health services, and transportation, among others. As a result, they do not develop the necessary skills to meet their personal and professional goals, which would allow them to escape poverty. We see families and youth with low income trapped in this cycle, generation after generation, surviving month after month.
