Description
Racism in our state held its ugliest battle right here in downtown Tulsa. On May 31, 1921, the all-black community of Greenwood was decimated because of racial hate and jealousy. Over 35 square blacks of homes and businesses were looted and burned to the ground. It is reported that at least three hundred Greenwood residents were murdered in what is known as the Tulsa Race Massacre. Thousands more left Tulsa, while many stayed to rebuild their community out of the ashes, and with not even one single dollar of insurance claims paid to them.
Previously, the Annual Race Against Racism is held in the historic Greenwood District in downtown Tulsa. This year, we are doing things a little bit differently. Because this race is so important to Tulsa, we have opted to hold a week long virtual race. We commemorate the beautiful Greenwood District that was destroyed, and celebrate all the great organizations working on diversity and inclusion in every area of the Tulsa Community. Registration opens October 12, 2020 at 8am. Participants will have the entire week to join hundreds of others not just in our city, but across the nation as we symbolically stomp out racism with every step. Register today, and be a part of making #OneTulsa a reality!
