Calling all Stumptown XC teams! And anyone else would like to participate!
This is a free virtual, XC-scored 5K that will take place from 8am Saturday, May 9th to end of day Saturday, May 16th Pacific Time being held as in-person races are prohibited right now. Results will be submitted by the submission of a Strava or Garmin Connect activity URL so that all times can be validated. The event will be scored both individually with age group rankings as well as by team with teams in categories of Open, Masters 40+, Masters 50+, Masters 60+, Masters 70+. The rules are the following:
1. Individuals register and select teams just like a standard Stumptown XC race or opt to compete unattached.
2. Between 8am May 9th and 11:59pm May 16th athletes will individually run a 5K and report their time either via a text message or a web form to an automated system. The submission of the time must include a link to a public Strava or Garmin Connect activity which is of at least a 5K distance and whose elapsed time matches the time submitted. All times will be verified against the Strava or Garmin Connect activity.
3. The race will be both individually and team scored. Team scoring will be using the Standard Stumptown XC Scoring Rules in which, for Open, Masters 40+, and Masters 50+ categories the top four runners of each team score and the fifth runner is a displacer. For Masters 60+ and Masters 70+, the top 3 runners will score and the 4th is a displacer. Individual scoring will be by 5 year age groups.
4. Just like in traditional XC races there will be separate Mens and Womens events.
5. There will be scoring in team divisions Open, Masters 40+, Masters 50+, Masters 60+, Masters 70+. When you register you will designate which team you want to be scored on. For example if you are over 40 you could choose either "NAC Open" or "NAC Masters 40+"
6. In order to ensure fairness, the 5K cannot have more than 400m on a track and your start and finish points must be within half a mile of each other (so you don't post a 5K running down Mt Hood). A loop course is okay (as long as it's not a track).
All public health guidelines must be followed during this event.

One thing different about this virtual race is that all times will be verified. When you submit your time you will be required to submit the URL to your Strava or Garmin Connect activity and that activity must be set to public. The time, name, and distance on the activity will be verified against your entry. Your race time will be the elapsed time on your activity. Eg, if you stop your watch during the activity the time you are stopped still counts towards the race time.
The goal is to give athletes a structured event to train for and participate in during the period that in-person races are prohibited.
This event is not meant to be a replacement for the Fall series. We hope in-person races can be held by Fall and that the Fall series can be produced like normal

Q: How do I submit my results?
A: You will receive an email prior to the race with instructions on how to submit results. You will be able to submit your results by either texting a link of your Strava or Garmin Connect activity to an automated system or you can fill out a web form and provide a URL to your Strava or Garmin Connect activity.
Q: I don't own a GPS or footpod
A: Your phone likely has a GPS in it and you can record your activity by downloading the Strava app in your phone's app store. In order to hold a bona fide competition there has to be a means by which athletic performances are verified, and in a virtual race GPS or footpod seems to be the best way to do it. You will need a GPS-recording device or footpod to participate.
Q: Will you accept treadmill times?
A: Yes! As long as it's on a standard treadmill (eg, not an AlterG) and you are wearing a footpod and you upload the activity to Strava or Garmin Connect.
Q: I was on pace to run a sub 13 minute 5K but my Garmin broke mid run. Can you take my word for my time?
A: Sorry but no. You can re-attempt your run within the submission period.

Q: Do I need to be in Portland or perform my run in Portland?
A: No the race is open to participants everywhere! You can perform you run wherever you like (just no more than 400m on a track and start and finish point must be within half a mile of each other).
